Tokyo: Shinjuku Drinks and Neon Nightlife Tour

1. Tokyo: Shinjuku Drinks and Neon Nightlife Tour

Head to Shinjuku, Tokyo’s entertainment area, and join locals as you grab a bite and a drink on a walking tour in the evening. Taste local flavors as you try different drinks and snacks, learning about the area from your local guide along the way. Kick off your evening at a Japanese izakaya-style gastropub for their happy hour. As this is a favorite pastime of many Japanese, spend some leisurely time chatting with your fellow tour mates over drinks and snacks. Then, meander through Omoide Yokocho, a collection of alleyways full of tiny bars and eateries. Get a peek at the different type of food joints locals usually eat at, from yakitori restaurants and soba shops to cafes and bars. If you'd like to come visit again on your own time, Omoide Yokocho is a great place to sit and eat elbow-to-elbow with local businessmen. See how they unwind after working hours. Later on, reach Kabukicho, an area full to the brim with over 3,000 shops, restaurants, nightclubs, and karaoke. Awash in bright neon lights, Kabukicho is one of Tokyo’s most photogenic areas. With streets filled with people and music blaring from every corner, you are sure never to have a boring evening in Kabukicho. End your evening in Golden Gai, a compact neighborhood full of tiny bars that can usually only seat six to eight people at a time. It is here in Shinjuku’s most popular drinking spot where you will stumble upon one of your guide’s favorite bars and say kanpai (cheers!) over more drinks. From here, your guide can either give you directions back to your hotel, your next destination, or leave you chatting through the night with new friends.

This ramen tour was absolutely incredible! One of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life period. I like to think I know a decent amount about ramen but Frank actually lives and breathes the stuff. It was so cool getting to pick his brain about all things ramen while trying some of his favorite spots around Tokyo. If I could do it all over again I would in a heartbeat, although I would probably try harder to find a friend to come with me so I could try all 4 options at each stop instead of having to choose 2. Overall this was an unforgettable experience, easily the best part of my trip to Japan. I’d highly recommend this to anyone whether you’re a seasoned ramen veteran or a total newbie you’ll be able to get so much out of this experience.

This tour is a must if you are visiting Tokyo. Foodies and history enthusiasts will both get their fix. We got to pick 6 different ramens (smaller portions that add up to the equivalent of a full meal) out of a total of 12 available at three restaurants. Our assembled tour group of less than ten people walked and took the subway between the three locations and this gave us the occasion to get to know each other. Frank was very personable and knowledgeable. Two thumbs up!

Frank was very knowledgeable and easy going; I had a great time walking from shop to shop discussing the city and it’s good culture with him and my fellow travelers. We tried six delicious and vastly different ramens that were thoroughly explained and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tokyo!

We had a wonderful experience with Frank! We loved his selection of Ramen and especially enjoyed learning about his passion for Ramen. Great company, guide & teacher. We enjoyed learning about his love for Ramen.

True ramen guru, knows all the local spots and knows how to build out a menu. Very hospitable and knowledgeable.
