Full description
Enjoy a 90-minute tasting tour of the best of the Ferry Building Marketplace, where a knowledgeable guide/food industry professional will lead you on a historic, food-filled journey of the building's local, artisan cuisine and food purveyors. After a brief break, you'll then voyage by ferry to one of the city’s most popular attractions, Alcatraz Island, for a self-guided tour of the beautiful island and its history-packed maximum-security prison that has drawn San Francisco Bay Area tourists for decades. Beginning your tour at the Ferry Building Marketplace, you'll sample award-winning tastes from the Bay Area’s best food artisans, learning how this historic transportation building became the ultimate destination for food lovers: locals and visitors alike. Expect artisan cheese from Cowgirl Creamery, fresh loaves from Acme Bread, chocolate confections from Recchuiti, and French macarons from Miette (subject to change). Come hungry! Once you’ve satisfied your culinary cravings, you'll be directed to Pier 33 (a short walk from the Ferry Building) to Alcatraz Landing to pick up your tickets for the Alcatraz Cruise afternoon departure to The Rock. Most guests spend approximately 2.5 hours exploring the island, but you are welcome to return when you choose. A self-guided headset tour (with Al Capone talking in your ear) is also included in the ticket price.

We had a very fun time on the Alcatraz and Ferry Building Food Tour. Directions on how to find our tour guide for the food tour were very good. We arrived before our guide, though, so we were waiting around wondering if we were in the right place. Our guide, Katie, was very knowledgable and had some goodies for us right off the bat. The food we got was very good but sometimes, it was hard to hear Katie due to the fact that it was busy inside the Ferry Building. The part of the tour that could use some work was the transition from the Ferry Building Tour to the Alcatraz Tour. While it sounds like both are run by the same company, you're pretty much on your own after the food tour. We were given a post card and told to walk to Pier 33 (about a half hour walk) and tell 'them' that we were part of the food tour. What we weren't told was that we had to go to the ticket window and give your name to get your tickets. It would have been better if we had clearer instructions for that part.
