Taormina: Guided Historic City Tour

2. Taormina: Guided Historic City Tour

Taormina is certainly among the most beautiful and touristic places in all of Sicily. Your guided tour starts from the beautiful Ancient Theater (also called the Greek Theater), which is one of the most famous symbols of Taormina. It has been dug into the side of a mountain, and from here you can enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the Ionian Sea, with Mount Etna in the background. In Roman times it was renovated, and has reached a capacity of about 20,000 spectators. Today it is still used for concerts and cultural events. Your tour will then continue with a visit to the Naumachia (naval battle), a large red-brick monumental fountain, which is formed by a wall more than 100 meters long and 5 meters high. Afterwards, you will reach Roman Odeon, a small ancient theater, before moving on to Palazzo Corvaia. Built in a purely Gothic style, this is the most famous palace of Taormina. Your visit continues near the Catania Gate, with Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, which was also also built in a Gothic style. You will then tour the Church of San Giuseppe, which boasts an impressive Baroque style. The tour will then end at the cathedral of Taormina, which was built in around 1400 A.D. on the ruins of a small Medieval church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari.

Spectacularly perched on the side of a mountain, Taormina is one of Sicily's most popular destinations all year round. It's rich in history, art, culture and tradition, besides being located in one of the most breathtaking spots of the whole country. Founded in the 4th century BC, Taormina enjoyed great prosperity under the Greek ruler Gelon II and later under the Romans but fell into quiet obscurity after being conquered by the Normans in 1087. Its reincarnation as a tourist destination dates to the 18th century, when northern Europeans discovered it on the Grand Tour. Among its fans was DH Lawrence, who lived here between 1920 and 1923. With this 2-hour private guided tour, you will enjoy the most important treasures of the town. Excellent experience. Margaret our guide is a beautiful woman, elegant, intelligent, acute, with subtle humor and great culture, who has been able to lead us into the history of the city, Sicily and the Greek theater through extremely interesting anecdotes, stories and historical references and, why no, fun, which made the tour interesting and in-depth but still light and captivating. Congratulations Margaret! We hope to meet you again !!!! THANK YOU !! Alessandra Laura Guglielmo and Olimpia 19.08.21

Great visit of nearly 4 hours of Taormina with our guide Chiara who speaks very good French! Very erudite, she taught us a lot of things about the history of the city but also about anecdotes which came to spice up the visit! The visit was embellished with many little touches like a local granita coffee or the best canollo in town! Very highly recommended

Engaging Insightful generous in all her years of living in Sicily

We would highly recommend our walking tour of Beautiful Taormina with Chiarra, she was passionate and engaing and clearly passionate about Sicily. Taormina’s and Sicily’s history quickly unfolded as Chiarra walked us through the streets

Informative and entertaining

Individual requests were taken into account. Of course, 2 hours are not enough to see everything, but you get a good insight into history and things off the beaten track.
