    Experience the beautiful landscape of Umbria on a full-day tour of the Marmore Waterfalls, the Sibillini Mountains, and Valnerina Valley. Taste the black truffle, hams, and cheeses of Umbria, all Protected Designation of Origin (DOC). Drive to the remote town of Cascia, home of the Augustinian nun Santa Rita. The former Roman town was destroyed in the 1st century B.C. by an earthquake. In medieval times it was sacked by the Byzantines and Lombards, and later occupied by papal troops to become a papal city. Visit the home of Santa Rita in the nearby hamlet of Roccaporena, perched at an altitude of 2,320 feet (700 meters). Stop for lunch in Norcia, birthplace of the founder of the Benedictine order, St. Benedict, and see the Gothic façade of the Basilica of Saint Benedict, with a rosette and crests of the 4 evangelists that dates to about 1200 A.D. Depart Norcia for the staggering Marmore Waterfalls. Among the highest in Europe, the waters cascade 540 feet (165 meters) down 3 terraces, the first (and highest) a drop of 272 feet (83 meters). The name derives from the calcium salts in the rocks that take on the appearance of marble. The manmade waterfalls were constructed by the Romans in 271 B.C. to drain the stagnant waters of the Velino River’s swamps, directing them to the natural leaps of Marmore and on into the Black River. Built over 2,000 years ago, this is the largest manmade waterfall in the world.

    We were disappointed as the booking didn’t mention that it was a self guided tour or that the falls were closed. Important points as we had a car and could have done the driving. That said when it was voiced to the driver he suggested forgoing the last stop and substituting Assisi. He was awesome. Took us everywhere and more an made up for our initial disappointment. Tank you very much. We loved it.

    A very nice day in Umbria

    We were met at the train station in Spoleto by Maurizio. He was our driver for the day. Once he found out my husband had an interest in monasteries he went out of his way to take us to several that were not on the tour. The town of Norcia was very quaint. Cassia is very small and really you don't need more than an hour here. Just beware that the tour of the old monastery was (for us anyway) totally in Italian. We really enjoyed the waterfalls. You can pay for a ticket to walk around the base of the falls or you can go across the street and take a small hike up to a great vantage point.

    Mauricio is great! Marmot falls, and Cascia are amazing! We missed out on Norcia, but it was not because of Mauricio or getyourguide. We spent so much time enjoying the falls and Cascia, we didn't have the time to go to Norcia or we would have missed our train to Rome. It's ok because the main reason we booked the trip was so my wife could see St. Rita and visit Roccaporena. It meant alot, and I appreciate Mauricio letting us take our time and go at our own pace. We couldn't have asked for more. Guess we just have to come back again and go to Norcia then. GetYourguide is a great company and Mauricio is an excellent guide!! And thanks for getting us to our train on time!! Thanks again! Until next time!!
