Start your 3-hour walking tour in Monastiraki, where you’ll see the 18th-century Tzistaraki Mosque and the Byzantine Church of the Pantanassa, and hear about the monuments, the surrounding area, and some popular urban myths. As you pass the Hadrian Library your guide will tell you about the use of this area during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Visit the Bath House of the Winds, the city’s only public bath surviving to the present day. It dates from the first period of Turkish rule (1453-1669) and stands near the Roman Forum and the Tower of the Winds. You can also stop in to see the Man and Tools permanent exhibition at the Museum of Greek Folk Art. Walk along Dioskouron Street to the ruins of the of 5th-century Byzantine monastery located on the north slope of the Acropolis, and hear about life during that era. When you reach Adrianou Street you’ll see the oldest house in Athens. On the way to the Thrasilos Monument you’ll explore the ruins of the ,Capuchin Monastery, and hear about the transformation of well-known ancient monuments into Christian churches or mosques. As you make your way to Filellinon Street you’ll visit the Byzantine Church of Panagia Lykodimos, which was built on the ancient temple of Apollo and a Roman bath, and was reconstructed in 1850 to house a Russian Orthodox church.
