Full description
Afternoon Tour Driving along the coastal road past the wonderful beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza and countless coves, you have a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf. A crowning feature of the tour Cape Sounion is, the Temple of Poseidon, god of the sea. Standing atop sheer cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea, the marble temple has served as a landmark for sailors from ancient times until today. The "Sanctuary of Sounion" is first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaus stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman, Phrontes Onetorides. Construction on the grand Temple of Poseidon began around 500 BC but was never completed; the temple and all the votive offerings were destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. The Temple of Poseidon that now stands at Sounio was built in 444 BC atop the older temple ruins. After the guided tour of the Temple we return to Athens approximately at 7pm.

Our guide Xenia was delightful. She has an extensive educational background in Greek history and archaeology, but above that, she is a passionate storyteller. We loved getting out of Athens and seeing the coastal countryside, with Xenia’s running commentary on the sites. Sounion Cape is lovely, the temple worthwhile.

Breathtaking views along Athens Riviera and beaches up to the magnificent temple of Poseidon. Very knowledgeable guide who got me interested again in the Greek mythology stories. Ironically we had this tour dedicated to Poseidon the god of the sea, earthquakes and storms on the same day an earthquake hits Greece.

It's a great way to spend a half day. It's about 1-1/2 hours, going along the coast and seeing the beaches along the way. The site itself is right on the cape, far up the hill, and the views are stunning. The site itself is small, and you can see it all in about 20 minutes. Although billed as a "sunset" tour, since we went during one of the longer days of the year, we were out well before sunset, but that didn't matter. One interesting thing--look at all of the graffiti on the base of the columns. The trip back took longer than expected because of traffic, but this was a minor thing, and certainly no fault of the company. The online purchase of tickets was easy, and the guide was good. Highly recommended.
