Full description

Explore the UNESCO-listed Meteora monasteries on a full-day guided trip from Athens. Take the train to Kalambaka and ascend to the clifftop to admire the monasteries and hermit caves of Badovas.

Catch the train for Kalambaka from Athens railway station. Admire the beauty of the countryside along the way before arriving in Kalambaka, a small town built at the foot of rocky grey cliffs crowned by the monasteries of Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spot your driver upon arrival in Kalambaka, holding a signboard with your name on it. Be shown to the vehicle that’ll take you to the monasteries, where you'll have time to visit 3 of them, as well as the hermit caves of Badovas.

At the end of the day, be transferred back to Kalambaka. Enjoy some time to explore the town and enjoy a light lunch (not included in the tour price). Afterward, the train departs Kalambaka, arriving in Athens in the evening.

The trip was wonderful. The hotel in Athens tried to discourage us from trying to do it in one day. It was not a problem to do it, and we are glad we didn’t listen to them. Maria was a wonderful guide. We learned so much. I would recommend checking about meals. Our itinerary did not mention a meal, so we packed good. Our first stop was at a restaurant for lunch. We didn’t need to haul food around. The tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We visited 3 monasteries and learnt so much about the history. The views are breathtaking. I suffered from motion sickness and did take a tablet but the bus goes slowly and stops regularly so was not affected. There are many steps but you can take your time and it is so worth it. I would recommend to the ladies to bring a long light skirt or a large scarf to tie around their waist. Most monasteries provide them for free but one was charging 3 euro to buy one. We went on a rainy day but it was still magical. It does take 4h by train from central Athens but you will not regret it. We went with our 11 yo daughter who also absolutely loved it.

The place, Meteora, is spectacular. Our private guide was the best. The overall organization by the tour group was dismal. When we arrived at the train station in Athens, the train was not running due to weather. There was no one to give us instructions or explanations. We had to take a 3 hour bus ride to a secondary location. We had another hour delay and were placed on 2 different trains where our reserved seatswerealdeay occupied. We then had to transfer to a 3rd train to get to our destination which we were fortunate to figure out on our own. We arrived 2 hours late cutting our tour time considerably. However, our wonderful guide, Vasily, was very courteous, accommodating and knowledgeable. He made the most of our shortened time. Without him, I would have felt very disappointed. He was a gem.
