My wife and I hired Caner recently for a day-long private tour of some of Istabul’s most important sights, and we were so happy that we did! Caner is one of the best guides we’ve ever had – he is warm and friendly, his English is excellent, and his knowledge of Istabul’s history is incredible! He clearly loves the work that he does, and his enthusiasm is infectious. (He even takes great pictures!) Most of all, we were so appreciative of how he went out of his way to make sure that the day was as comfortable as possible for my wife, who is pregnant. We highly recommend doing this tour with Caner!

  • Istanbul: Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia

    5. Istanbul: Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia

Begin the tour of the Sultanahmet district in the heart of old Istanbul at Hagia Sophia. Built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, this church is a marvel of world architecture. Its massive dome dominates the skyline of old Istanbul. It is famous for its mosaics including glittering portraits of emperors and empresses. Then discover the Basilica Cistern, s the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul; was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Explore the Grand Bazaar which was the commercial heart of the old city. Its 4,000 shops are full of treasures including carpets and kilims, silks, jewelry, ceramics, icons, and leather goods.

Lovely places to visit - There is not much to do at the Baslica Cistern apart from take pictures at different angles to get some lovely effects. When music is playing it resonates throughout and is pleasing to the ears. Grand Bazaar is awesome and a wealth of things to see and do. Do not like the repetition of so much of the same thing. After a while it all merges into one!!!! Hagia Sophia is interesting to view and worth the visit and understanding some of its history.

What people are saying about Basilica Cistern

Our day trip with Ayla was an experience. Very good German tour guide with in-depth knowledge of history and safe local knowledge. Ayla responded to our requests, even if it exceeded the time limit, and also gave us a good insight into the everyday life of Istanbul. If we had had more time, we would have liked to spend another interesting day with her. Thanks Ayla

A very nice travel companion with humor and good contacts! Because of the closure at the mosque on Tuesday we did an additional Bosphorus tour! Because she had contacts we could even sit in the cab! In the end we invited them to dinner because of their great tour! If you take German ask for an Ayla !!!

Very interesting tour and with Ayla we had an excellent guide who managed to guide us through the long waiting line. That was great and saved us hours of waiting. Ayla inspired us with her knowledge of the sights of Istanbul!
