Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Guided Hike with Swim and Lunch

4. Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Guided Hike with Swim and Lunch

The 7 Cascades or Tamarind Falls as it is known is located in the district of Black River Gorge near to the village of Henrietta. The source of the waterfalls starts from the Tamarind River and consists of at least 7 simultaneous splendid waterfalls. The surrounding area is renowned for its breathtaking nature as it is filled with exotic and indigenous plants, trees and beautiful species of birds making it a sought after destination for any nature lover or adventurer’s bucket list. Undoubtedly the only way to thoroughly enjoy and discover this hidden gem in the middle of Mauritius is with an experienced guide on our 5 to 6 hour hike. After a short safety briefing and introduction, head off along the trail for about 40 minutes until reaching the first part of the Tamarind Falls canyon. As you embark on this great adventure of canyoning and hiking you begin to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life as you become overwhelmed by this beautiful scenery. The distance between the first and second plateau is short and can only be reached by a steep descent. This is where you will have your first opportunity to jump from the waterfall into the basin below, a drop of about seven meters, but still the fastest way to get down to the next plateau !! For non jumpers, don’t worry! You can climb down a path to reach the plateau and still enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool, clear water. On arrival at the fifth waterfall, there are two ways to get down. The first way is a five-meter jump into the water-filled basin below or you can climb down taking advantage of the nearby trees and branches that create a natural ladder. Of course, if you choose the second option our skilled guide will be by your side at all times to guarantee your safety and guide you. This is one of the main reasons why it’s important to have an experienced guide with you. If you feel the urge to cool off after climbing down, you can still take a relaxing swim in the lagoon type basin at the bottom of the fifth waterfall. At the end of this adventure and reaching the goal of standing on top of the seventh waterfall a sense of achievement overwhelms you as it sets the scene for a superb view over the lush green canyon. A chance to look back at the terrain you’ve covered from the first waterfall, it also puts into perspective how high these magnificent waterfalls really are. From the top of the seventh waterfall to its basin there is approximately a 60 meter drop, so for those thrill-seekers who aren’t afraid of heights and want to take a closer look, it’s wise to lie on your stomach just near the edge of the waterfall. The 7 Cascades is truly worth a visit!

Wow what a fantastic experience!!! Rajesh our driver for the day collected us from the hotel, took us to the boats to go out and swim with the dolphins. He gave us a fantastic oversight of the country, its people and history during the journey. We got to swim with the dolphins, the guides helping us locate them. Be aware there will be quite a few boats trying to find the dolphins, so this is not a 1:1 experience but was still worth the journey. Snorkel and flippers were provided and take a Gopro if you have one! After this experience (around 2 hours) we were taken by Rajesh to see the waterfall, 7 coloured earth and giant tortoises (this is Rs500 pp extra) plus taken to see the Hindu temple at the great lake. Rajesh can explain everything to you, his knowledge was extensive. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, however I would say this trip is NOT for families with young children, the dolphins are but not the whole tour as its a very long day.

This is an amazing hiking trail with plenty of stunning views, challenging walks and fun activities. Kevin is an excellent tour guide equipped with good knowledge of trees, flowers, animals, Mauritius history and more. He is familiar with every step of the trail and (most important) he takes nice photos that you can show off to friends. We covered all the 7 platforms and 13 waterfalls in 5 hours. Every waterfall is different, and you can have different activities at each of them, swimming, fish spa, cooling down in the falling water etc. You can even go behind a waterfall and climb up another one. The journeys between the platforms are also interesting, surprising and different from one another. I highly recommend this day trip to those who are enthusiastic about nature and fit for the journey.

The climb itself was a little bit tricky, but in the end, it was all worth it. The view from the top was spectacular and absolutely breathtaking. And the tour guide, Bryn, was fantastic, too. He motivated all of us to the very end, cheered when we reached a peak, was happy when we pushed ourselves through situations we didn’t think we could overcome. He is passionate about his work and his life in Mauiritius. All in all, it doesn’t matter if you have fear of heights, you can do it! The view from the top will be a huge reward for you. Ps.: try to go in for it on a sunny day! When it rains, it can be very difficult, and it is not recommended at all.

Akeel was an excellent guide, this trip is a must if you are here in Mauritius. We saw such a wonderful places, we never forget, it is a lifetime memory. Akeel helped us with climbing at the difficult spots, showed us beautiful waterfalls and lagoons and was very kind and thaught us a little about the culture, history. We are very happy that we booked this trip! Don't forget your sunscreen and bikinis and adventure at home! :) Thank you for the little present Akeel!

One of the best trips ever. Breathtaking view! Best tour guide ever! This trip is a must have, if you visit Mauritius! Thank you, Bryn!
