Reykjavík: 2023 Volcano Eruption Site and Reykjanes Tour

1. Reykjavík: 2023 Volcano Eruption Site and Reykjanes Tour

Update August 9th: The flow of new lava at Litli-Hrutur has stopped, at least for the time being. The area is still smoldering and is fascinating to visit. After a period on calm following eruption in 2012 and 2022, the Reykjanes Peninsula has awoken once more. In mid-July, a new volcano at Litli Hrutur erupted spewing lava and smoke over a vast area. Discover the beauty of volcanic landscapes in the Geldingadalur Valley on this day trip from Reykjavík. Walk past the eruption site Meradalir and Fagraadalsfjall Volcano areas to see the new lava fields. Capture photos at locations like Lake Kleifarvatn, The Bridge between Continents, and Gunnuhver Hot Springs. Start with a pickup in Reykjavík before heading on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views. Stop by Lake Kleifarvatn to take in the black sand beach and surrounding mountains. Lace up your hiking boots and begin the long walk towards Litli Hrutur, north of Meradalir. Please note that the hike is of moderate to hard difficulty and takes around 2 hours each way. But please note that the route we take can vary depending on conditions on the day. We will always take you to the safest viewing point. This is a good moment to eat your packed lunch. Drive the Reykjanes Peninsula, where volcanoes have shaped the area, with immense ancient lava fields now covered by soft green lava moss. Continue to the Gunnuhver Hot Springs to breathe in steam from the boiling waters. Make your way to the oldest lighthouse in Iceland Reykjanes Lighthouse. Admire the cliffs and sea stacks formed by the Atlantic Ocean at the Valhnúkamöl Boulder Ridge. Finally, see the Bridge Between Continents which crosses a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Get a picture of you walking across the bridge before returning to Reykjavík.

2. From Reykjavik: Reykjanes tour with Fagradalsfjall Site Hike

Set off on a fun day trip with a friendly, local guide. This essential tour is easy to fit into the schedule of a busy traveler to Iceland. This area is renowned for its dramatic lava landscapes, with conic volcanoes, fields of jagged basalt, geothermal areas, and geological marvels. Start with Reykjavik pickup-if lodging elsewhere, please make arrangements to go to the city. The stops we will make include: Seltun Hot Springs, where you can see a natural hot spring and see how hot it naturally is- it can resemble boiling mud. We will also visit the Reykjanes Lighthouse named Reykjanesviti, where you can look into the ocean and see some beautiful cliffs. Our next stop is the Bridge Between the Continents where you can walk and literally be in two places at once between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. If we have time and group interest, we may add the following stops: Leiðarendi Lava Cave (we will not enter the cave), Lake Kleifarvatn, Krýsuvíkurkirkja, and the Fish Drying Place. After we sightsee, we will do a light hike to visit the volcano area where the 2021 Fagradalsfjall and 2022 Meladalur Volcanos erupted. Please note, we can not guarantee an active eruption, and we might modify the route for the hike if snow or other weather conditions have an impact on our usual route. If snowfall or any change in eruption status, the route may change in difficulty and length- if you have any questions or concerns please reach out. If the volcano actively is erupting, nothing compares to the majesty of an erupting volcano. Flaming craters and fissures, gleaming rivers of molten rock, and a glowing field of lava make the time you will spend here unforgettable. Be sure to bring a drone or camera to capture this phenomenal event. If there is a major eruption, there may be age restrictions in place for the safety of any small children. If you are unsure, please contact us before booking. We are happy to answer any questions. After enjoying this incredible site, you’ll head back to Reykjavik with some once-in-a-lifetime memories. Our guide Siggi was informative, entertaining and fun. We saw some amazing places, including geothermal areas and the bridge between continents which was cool. The volcano hike was moderate difficulty, it was windy so it made it more challenging. We saw lava fields with steam coming out but the last eruption was in August and we didn’t actually get to see any lava.

Walking on still smoldering brittle lava fields of the volcano which crumbled under your feet gave it an other worldly experience . The Gunnuhver steam vents where one can disappear in the steam was also awesome ! Guide was informative , charming and entertaining !

Amazing, the guide and driver are fabulous. The best tour ever. We have been in many places, was a really bad weather but they adapt everything for us.

The volcano adventure was fantastic! We hike to the view point of the volcano and the hike and the views were STUNNING!!

An easy going tour with a great very knowledgeable guide
