Full description
Traveling is only as deep as the people you interact with, and on this half-day tour, you will get to discover Cape Town in an up-close and personal way through the eyes of the locals. During your time together, you will have a chance to dig deeper into the multicultural side of Cape Town, and hear their personal stories of forceful removals from District Six to the rich cultural landscape of township life. The day either begins at 08.00 or at 13.00, returning approximately four-and-a-half hours later. You will begin in District Six with the Museum (closed Sundays). Here you can educate yourself on the forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants in the 1970s by the apartheid regime. This once lively community of former slaves, artisans and merchants was once home to almost 1/10 of the city of Cape Town's population before the brutality that came. After your education, you will move to Langa, the oldest formal township in South Africa. This suburb was established in 1927, and was established specifically for Black Africans before the apartheid era. There is a history of violent uprisings here, and your visit will be benefited with the local's stories and perspectives. From here we move onto Shebeen (township pub) with the option to taste some traditional beer! How can you turn down a beer with the locals? Finally we move to Khayelitsha - the largest and fastest growing township in South Africa today. Its local name is Xhosa, which means New Home. Here you will get to meet with some of the township entrepreneurs who are breathing new life in to these historic towns. If you're fortunate enough to be with us on a Sunday, we'll even have the chance to visit a charismatic church service in the townships! It's truly an experience not to be missed!

Slightly above Average experience. The Guide was a really nice and passionate guy, he helped me understanding what was going on nowadays and how the townships were born. The tour itself was ok, it was quite commercial. They walk you around the township however it lacks a bit of depth in the life of people. Would recommend other people to go to find out what’s really going on in the townships.

Nice driver and also guide. The local person who showed us around the township was super enthusiastic and showed us many nice things. He could tell us life in the township as if we lived there ourselves. It is a super fun trip and makes us think about the people who live there. The driver dropped us back where we were picked up. This is stated differently on the details of Get your guide, where it is stated that the tour ends in the township and that you must return to your hotel in your own way. This makes you hesitate to book this trip, but don't worry the driver will take you back to your hotel.

    Great experience

You can get a glimpse of the life of a township (black settlement). A local guide will always accompany you and give you a polite explanation. Local kindergartens, parts of old brick dwellings, folk craft factories for independence, traditional fortune-teller visits, craft beer tasting and much more. When tourists come and drop money, the people who live there make a living, so there is no dangerous atmosphere and you can take a walk with peace of mind.
