Tusker Safari at Kalawewa National Park

3. Tusker Safari at Kalawewa National Park

The imposing Kala Wewa and Balalu Wewa tanks, built in the 5 BC by King Dhatusena, adorns the 6,000 hectare Kalawewa National Park, alongside an impressive 45-foot Avukana Buddha statue. But the centerpieces of the park are the star residents of the sanctuary: the tusker elephants. Of the male elephant population, only about seven percent are tuskers. Kalawewa boasts of a high concentration of tuskers, a privilege to behold. In addition to the tuskers, large flocks of open-billed storks are a common sight. The park has a beautiful landscape lined with massive signature Kumbuk trees. Your accompanying guide will give you additional information about the tuskers. You will also catch sight of numerous birds and other animals which dwell in the sanctuary. Your guide will share interesting facts about the flora and fauna of the Kalawewa National Park. If you arrive during the monsoon period (October-November) the filled up tanks will attract gatherings of animals and birds alike, amidst the kumbuk trees and vegetation.

Minneriya National Park and Hiriwadunna Village Tour

The area, surrounded by jungle and marshland, and the village, bustle in the morning or evening. The amazing birdlife and butterflies—and maybe even a crocodile or two—only add to the excitement and charm of the village and its surroundings. Great park to get away from crowds and the roads are a dream after the west side of the island. For the first couple of hours we saw deer, buffalo, monitor lizard and great birds. It was a beautiful drive. When we saw the elephants it made it super special. The first two were at a distance , the next two right up close - really close! Then we came across a herd of mothers and babies feeding. It was magical. Very uncommercial if that’s a word. Guides are very keen to please but have limited English . A great trip

We had a private tour...unexpectedly. Everything worked out great, we were picked up on time, then handed over to a jeep, where there was a breakfast box on the way, then enjoy the safari and at 11.30 a.m. we were already in Mirissa. To recommend!

Very quiet pleasant and punctual transfer. The safari was great, we were said to be really lucky and saw all the wild animals and, above all, a lot of different elephants.

Was great! Saw a lot of animals and the guide was super excited to show us everything he could! Highly recommend.
