Tangier: Full-Day Trip to Chefchaouen

9. Tangier: Full-Day Trip to Chefchaouen

After being collected from your Tangier accommodation, you will travel towards Chefchaouen. The city of Chefchaouen is one of the most attractive places of the north of Morocco, standing between the Rif mountains as a small piece of Andalucía. In the past, Chefchaouen was a walled city, which is why the Medina is divided into seven neighborhoods. One of them is Er Rif Al Andalus, where the Majzén Square can be viewed. Er Rif Al Andalus is also an access point to Uta el-Hammam, the most important square of the city. Here, in the Kasbah, the Andalusian Gardens and the Ethnic Museum can be found. Traveling further and bordering the Mosque, you will encounter the Mellah (the Jewish neighborhood) and Es Sueca, where many textile and craft shops are. Coming back to Uta el Hammam Square, you will encounter Es Sok, where the Moorish were settled in the 15th century. This area is home to two beautiful monuments, Huata Square, with its amazing fountain, and the Suk Mosque. Traveling through Uta el-Hammam Square once more, you will discover Kenitra Square Appears, which due to its remarkable breadth creates a stark contrast alongside the narrow streets. Other worthwhile place in the area are En Onsar, containing Zaituna Square and its centenary olive tree. Once outside the Medina and through Bab Onsar Gate, the Ras el Ma Fountain offers an incredible visual sight with its cascades, its naturally formed pools, and its mills and the washerwomen. From this point, you will enter the Medina in the El Rif Sebbadin neighborhood, where Sebbadin Square and a 15th-century mosque are located. At the conclusion of your tour, you will be transported back to your Tangier accommodation.

What people are saying about Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is also known as "The Blue City," for its uniformly colored houses. It was beautiful. Something different about the shops there is that you could see the products actually being made (rather than simply being sold by aggressive salesmen). I would have liked to have learned more about the Berber robes, but out group spent our free time at a carpet shop (which they were probably more interested than I was in the robes). We then went to Akchour Falls. It would be difficult to reach without renting a car, which is why I took this tour. (Chefchaouen alone would be reachable by bus.) The hike goes only to the Little Falls, which takes about two hours round-trip; the Greater Falls would require a 5-hour round-trip hike, which wouldn't be practical.

We had an amazing time on this day trip. Chefchaouen and the drive out there is stunning and a must see. Our driver Anass was very nice and Informative. The only thing I wish we new in advance was to bring water shoes for the akchour hike. Part of the hike required walking across a rocky river, up to our knees in water. Since we weren’t prepared for this we ended up taking an alternate route to see a small waterfall. We really enjoyed the hike as well but it is definitely not ideal for anyone with mobility issues as we were jumping across wet rocks on part of the hike but this luckily wasn’t an issue for us. Overall, we were very happy with the tour and it was our favourite experience in Morocco so far! I highly recommend!

Great day tour, get sufficient time in Chefchaouen to explore by self or follow the crowd. Distances are long so drive is long with 1-2 short breaks on the way, in peak season several tourist buses follow the same route so expect crowds.

Great place and experience. The guides were pleasant and explained everything!

Sulka was very helpful. descrption was very accurate to the itinerary
