Full description

Enjoy some time away from the beaches and explore a different side of Crete on a guided excursion. See the freshwater springs in the small town of Krasi, visit the Kera and Vidiani monasteries, step into the mythical Psychro Cave, and take part in a traditional ceramics workshop.

Get picked up from your accommodation in the morning and take a short drive to the traditional village of Krasi. Gaze at the beautiful freshwater springs and the oldest tree on Crete as you take in the countryside scenery. Up next, stop at two local monasteries.

See the Monastery of Kera dedicated to the Virgin Mary, near the town of Kera. Move on to Vidiani Monastery, a small male monastery at the foot of Louloudaki Mountain. Uncover the secrets of the mythical birthplace of Zeus, Psychro Cave, decorated with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Lastly, participate in a ceramics workshop and see how traditional pieces are made, before heading over to a typical Cretan tavern with local products and dishes to enjoy lunch at your own expense.

The Psychro Cave was excellent and made the whole trip worthwhile. The other places (a couple of monasteries, a pottery workshop, a village with an extremely old tree, a restaurant for lunch) were nice mini-stops to break up the journey. Unfortunately the tour operators had let a couple book who had two very young children, and the one still in diapers screamed through the majority of the journey, which made the bus very unpleasant. We also didn't realise that by getting on at Heraklion we would have to be in the bus for an extra hour at the start and at the end to pick up and drop off other travellers. Well worth it if you are staying in Hersonissos or nearby, less worth it if you're staying in Heraklion.

It was a long day trip. But very versatile. The driver brought us very safely through every narrow street, no matter how narrow, and the tour guide Tania is awesome. You can tell she puts her heart and soul into it. For me the highlight was the Cave of Zeus. A small but impressive cave. Before that you have to go up a climb that is not at ground level, so sneakers are recommended - no flip flops and sandals are not so well suited for this either. Price-performance ratio very good. All in one highly recommended.
