Full description
Drive approximately 2.5 hours after your pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. Stop in Pitumarca for a delicious breakfast before continuing your way towards the amazing Rainbow mountains. Next, it's time to start your walk uphill that will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. During the hike, admire the beautiful landscapes with many mountains covered in snow. Walk pass local people wearing the typical dress of the region and llamas and alpacas breeders. Once you reach the top, make use of some free time to take pictures and enjoy the beautiful view. After this, start descending through the Red Valley for about 3 hours (optional) to reach Japura where transport will wait for you. This path will be more special because you may be one of the only groups on this route. Finally, stop for a comforting lunch before returning to Cusco where the tour ends.

A great experience and an incredible experience. The climb is very strenuous in the last stage. Especially since the air is very thin because of the height. It is advisable to be physically fit. It is also better to be in a higher position for acclimatization a few days in advance.

This turned out to be an awesome experience. Not an easy trek but worth all the efforts. Our guide had coca leaves, and and something for us to inhale to counter the effect of altitude. I didn't need a horse (optional extra cost). Breakfast was typical Peruvian, I was impressed with the lunch buffet. Lots of tasty dishes. Our guide had enough English to communicate but more information was provided in Spanish. He ensured we stayed as a group + encouraged us along the way. I am glad I brought my walking poles since the stick provided didn't have a good grip in the slippery snow. I also had snacks to have once at the top. They do sell some food and you can take pictures with alpacas. Make sure you have change for that and some soles to pay to use the bathrooms. Wish I was told about the passport stamp once at the top. Didn't know. It would have been nice to be brought back to where we were picked up in the morning. Long walk uphill from the plaza after this trek.

Base camp reached with three hours of mini bus from Arequipa (plus half an hour of breakfast). You can reach the mountains on foot in times ranging from 2 to 3 hours depending on the person (recommended stocks of products based on coca leaves or to be sure to stay close to the guide). Horse transport is possible both from the base camp and from several locations during the journey, one way (60 sol) or even return (80-90). The last piece to reach the belvedere is still to be done on foot but the show is worth all the effort.
