  • Learn about the region's flora and fauna from a knowledgeable nature guide
  • Be on the lookout for dolphins, seals and even penguins
Full description

Spend a day in the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound, located in the heart of Fiordland National Park and three times longer than Milford Sound. Self-drive to Manapouri and board a cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri, followed by a bus trip across Wilmot Pass. Stop en route to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest. At Deep Cove, board the Patea Explorer, a purpose-built catamaran, for a 2-hour and 45-minute cruise on Doubtful Sound. See waterfalls, rainforests, and mountains during the cruise. You might spot the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, the colony of fur seals at the mouth of the fiord, or even rare Fiordland crested penguins. During the cruise, knowledgeable nature guides will provide informative commentary.  When it rains in Fiordland, the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains, and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on board the bus or vessel, this landscape is spectacular.

Be prepared for rainfall during your visit. Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain. At the end of your tour, be returned to the departure point.

The whole trip was excellent. The weather was also very kind and remained sunny all day. The scenery from both boat rides is interesting but the ride on Doubtful Sound is absolutely stunning and “”No Doubt”” we will be boring our friends and relatives for a long time to come with all tth e pictures we took. When we booked the trip we were never aware that we could book a lunch package. We took our own anyway as the tripis a 7 hour delight.

We have been waiting two years to do this trip and it didn't disappoint. The whole day was outstanding and the scenery was unbelievably beautiful and breathtaking on our way to and into Doubtful Sound. The seals were gorgeous and were out sunning themselves at the end of the Sound. Real NZ, the tour organisers, are wonderful operators, precision plus at the very best. All their staff are so knowledgeable and are great fun, they made the day so enjoyable. Thanks Real NZ for the bestest day out, it was perfect and to see the most beautiful old growth forests and pure nature at its best was just gorgeous. Make sure you book this trip when coming to Te Anau, New Zealand, you will love it. You do it the best RealNZ!! Cheers Cecily and John from Umina, OZ.

I am a photographer and this was my one opportunity to see this beautiful sound. The process is very smooth and they followed up before we boarded the first boat to make sure I was there. You had the choice of being inside or outside on the boats so dress for the cold wind. The commentary was excellent on all stages and they made sure you saw as much of everything on the trip as possible. Good food and coffee was available on the boat in the sounds.
