Taste traditional Emirati food, and learn more about life in the United Arab Emirates at a 1.5-hour cultural lunch at the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in Dubai. Located in a traditional wind tower house in the Al Bastakiya trading village of the Al Fahidi Historic District, the SMCCU was set up to raise awareness and demystify the local culture and customs of the United Arab Emirates. With an objective to improve cross-cultural understanding and communication between locals and guests, you will learn more about local life through award-winning cultural programs. Sample authentic Emirati dishes while chatting with your host about the culture and traditions of the UAE. Sit in the courtyard of the SMCCU on traditional floor cushions, and taste Arabic coffee and dates, along with a variety of local dishes, including dessert. Very relaxed and delicious meal with a knowledgeable guide into the culture and answered all questions fully. The meal was very Indian as opposed to the more traditional Arabic which what I would expect from that part of the world. Very interesting conversations about being environmentally friendly yet we were served water in small containers made of plastic. To take food away(which was fabulous to be able to do this!!) we were given foil containers and plastic bags to take food away(which was fabulous!!) maybe everyone could be told to bring their own multiple use containers if they want to be able to take food away. I highly recommend this activity as a first insight into the culture...but it did leave me wanting to know more and with no pointers as to what I can do to have more access to the local people to learn more about their culture.

An excellent lunch with a very knowledgeable host Ms Ruqaya. The motto Open doors...Open minds truly expresses the goal of this centre. Over a delicious meal you are encouraged to ask questions about any aspect of the Emirati culture. A fantastic way to experience an Arab meal and learn about the culture and customs of the Emirati people.

Absolutely must go to better understand the beautiful local culture!

The event was so elegantly organised in the midst of a beautiful hall! The hosts explained the local way of life as well as the sensible meanings behind their culture. Visitors can ask any questions, even those that would be difficult to ask in normal circumstances. This is an event that I will definitely go again just to ask more questions and enjoy the same from other visitors.
