Take a full-day tour from Munich to Hitler’s mountain retreat, located in the mountains above Berchtesgaden. Presented to him in 1939 as a 50th birthday present, the mountain chalet took 13 months to complete and includes an elevator bored through a tunnel in the rocks to reach the entrance. You will depart from Munich and drive along some of the most scenic roads in the German Alps. On arrival, a special bus will take you up to the Eagle´s Nest entrance area, where you will ride the elevator to the mountain peak, and into Eagle´s Nest itself. Look at beautiful views over the Alps, with free time on your own to explore. The lower rooms can be visited with an English-speaking guide, and offer views of the building's past through plate-glass windows. Graffiti left by Allied troops is clearly visible in the surrounding woodwork. A large fireplace in the restaurant shows severe damage along its lower edges, where soldiers have smashed off small shards of marble as souvenirs. Hitler's small study is now used as a store room for the cafeteria. After the tour, you will get more free time to go to the NS-Documentation-Center in Berchtesgaden, before the drive back to Munich.

The road leads to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Berchtesgaden and after a short photo stop here continue to the Obersalzberg Eagle’s Nest bus terminal. Here board a specially equipped mountain bus and experience a breathtaking ride up the four-mile (6.4 kilometers) road, negotiating a 27% incline up to a rocky plateau. Disembark the bus here and walk through the 406 foot (124 meters) tunnel to the original WWII brass elevator up to the Eagle’s Nest. Feel the palpable sense of history as the elevator carries you a further 406 feet (124 meters) through the heart of the Kehlstein mountain and straight into Hitler’s former lair. On arrival, take a fascinating tour of the building and afterward get some free time to enjoy the birdseye views and refreshments. Descend from the Obersalzberg toward the mountain town of Berchtesgaden. See the fortress-like system of underground bunker complexes that were built by the Nazis to be used as air-raid shelters, a military headquarters, and a possible last refuge for the Third Reich leaders. Having explored here, emerge back into the daylight and after a short walk, visit the grounds of Hitler’s now destroyed home, known as the Berghof. Continue to the Königssee (King's Lake) a glacial lake in an Alp-framed valley. After a short photo stop at the lake, we will travel back in time exploring the underground world of a 500-year-old salt mine. Relax on a scenic return drive along the Königssee River to Salzburg, where your tour concludes with a drop off at your accommodation or chosen central location.

Berchtesgaden holds so much historical value with regards to World War II. During the Third Reich the Obersalzberg was the Southern Headquarters for the National Socialist Party, with many top leaders owning homes on the mountain, and where many important political decisions were made. This private tour is perfect for those wishing to discover this history... This half day tour covers the famous Eagle's Nest and many of the other historically important sites on the Obersalzberg, including the more hidden locations that most tourists never hear about. While there are many tour options that include this area, most will only stop off at the most well known spots. This tour also includes the secrets hidden on the mountain which really provide an authentic account of the fascinating history of this area. In addition, the mountain scenery is extremely beautiful and on a clear day you will be surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the valley below, particularly from the Eagle's Nest. Itinerary: - If you are staying in the Berchtesgaden area, I will pick you up from your accomodation to begin the tour. If not, the meeting point is the convenient and centrally located Berchtesgaden train and bus station. - We begin with a driving tour of the Obersalzberg mountainside with detailed historical commentary throughout. - Visit on foot into the woods to the lesser-known ruins of Hitler's Berghof home, including the opportunity to experience the panoramic views that were once on offer from his very house. - Next comes the opportunity to explore some of the original bunkers that made up the extensive bunker system below the National Socialist complex on the Obersalzberg mountainside. - The highlight is a visit to the famous Eagle's Nest perched atop the Kehlstein mountain at 6, 017ft. Exploring the fascinating history of Hitler's teahouse including the original features, such as the huge marble fireplace and the famous brass elevator. - Exploration of more hidden locations. Having lived directly on the Obersalzberg for many years I can show you some of the more hidden secret areas. - Time to ask any questions you may have. I always welcome any questions you may have on the subject of WWII! - The tour will end where it began, either back at your hotel if in the Berchtesgaden area, or at the Berchtesgaden train and bus station. Alternatively if you would like to be dropped off in Berchtesgaden old town to look around, or at one of the other popular tourist attractions in Berchtesgaden that would also be no problem. Please note: The Eagle's Nest is only open May - October, depending on weather. If visiting November - April: Although not being able to visit the Eagle's Nest building itself, an in-depth historical account of the Eagle's Nest, using period photos to explain the historical significance of the building is included in this tour. Additionally, there will be an extended driving tour of Berchtesgaden to stop off at other WWII historical sites along the way.

Drive from Salzburg crossing the German border while enjoying great views. Pass Salzburg, cross the German border and continue into the Alps. Stop in Obersalzberg and switch to a reserved bus that will take you on a spectacular 6.5-kilometer drive along a spectacular single-lane road. The road was blasted out of solid rock with a 22% gradient that leads up to the Eagle's Nest (1,820 meters). To reach Hitler’s former residence, enter a 124-meter-long tunnel into the mountain. Climb aboard a golden brass elevator to ascend another 124 meters into the building itself. Walk to the Salzach river and into the old town of Salzburg to the shopping street Getreidegasse. Learn about the "white gold" and how it influenced the development of Salzburg. Explore the historical city centre which lays between the river and the Mönchsberg. Take a walk along the shopping street. Find beautifully wrought iron signs, arts and craft shops between famous name brands along the narrow street. Spoil yourself with a shopping spree in Getreidegasse after the tour. Mozarts Birthplace is right in the centre of Getreidegasse. Most people stop in front of the big yellow house or choose to visit the Museum. Listen to facts about the Mozart family, their life and career, their faith and their heritage. Continue through an alleyway to one of the most fun places in Salzburg - the Farmers Market at the University square. This big, baroque church forms an impressive backdrop for the food stands. Do not hesitate to try the local cheese, sausages, fruits and pretzels with some local beer or fresh water. The Old Market square is surrounded by shops and famous coffee houses. This is a place to enjoy the rest of your day after the tour with a cup of good coffee and freshly made apple strudel. It is time to walk to the Residenzplatz. The architecture changes all of a sudden. The small streets and the shops are replaced with big spacious squares, a big Residence fountain in the centre of the square, the Old Residenz and the New Residenz, the Dom square and the Chapter square. This tour combines the original locations from the musical "The Sound of Music" with the historical "Eagle's Nest". Your tour starts with a tour of the city including the Palaces Leopoldskron (von Trapp Family House) and Hellbrunn (Sound of Music Pavilion). Hellbrunn Palace is on the way to the Eagle's Nest which will be next. Passing the border to Germany the journey continues to the Sound of Music Meadow (The Hills are alive). Now is your chance to spin in the field, reenacting the opening scene. Head to the "Obersalzberg" which is located at 3000 ft. elevation right below the Eagle's Nest. Access the Eagle's Nest with special busses and an elevator. Admire the scenic view of the Bavarian Mountains, the King's Lake, and the surrounding area of Salzburg. Returning from the Eagle's Nest, continue to the second highlight of our tour, the Salzburg Lake District. Travel through the Wies Valley and further on to Fuschl and St. Gilgen. Take a stunning photo of the castle of Fuschl with emerald Lake Fuschl in the background. The next highlight is Lake Wolfgang and the village St. Gilgen, the scenery of the area was shown at the beginning of "The Sound of Music." Enjoy a view from the "Mozart View Point" to Lake Wolfgang and the "Schafberg" Mountain. Relax and enjoy the countryside on the drive from St. Gilgen to the lake "Mondsee" and further on to the town of Mondsee with the "Sound of Music Wedding Church", from where you make your way back to Salzburg. Your tour ends with a drop-off at your Salzburg hotel or any other location within the city.

Since this is a private tour, the itinerary can be adjusted based on what you wish to visit. Be picked up at your accommodation in Munich and start the scenic journey to Berchtesgaden in a comfortable VW minivan. An early pick-up time, no later than 8:00 AM, is recommended to avoid possible crowds in peak season. Follow the German Alpine road and see views of the Bavarian Alps and lakes. You’ll have the opportunity to stop along the way to take photos. Take in the Alpine scenery around Watzmann mountain, the second-highest in Germany. Learn about the history of the region. While you can choose which attractions to visit, of the 3 most popular attractions, Eagle’s Nest, Lake Königssee, and Herrenchiemsee Palace, it is recommended that you choose to visit maximum 2 of the 3. Experience the panoramic views from the Eagle’s Nest and learn about the history of the location. Learn about the remnants of the Nazi regime at nearby Obersalzberg and explore the extensive network of bunkers. Visit the village of Königssee and enjoy the diversity of shops in the surrounding area. Take an optional boat ride on the lake to hear the famous Königssee Echo. Next, head to the historic town of Berchtesgaden. If you wish, you can go down the panoramic road where the final scene of the "Sound of Music" was filmed.
