Head with your group to the ice fall, a scenic and exhilarating walk that requires crampons and a safety briefing. Along the way enjoy artful ice sculptures formed by nature. Your certified guide will take you on a scenic walk, during which you can appreciate the dramatic landscape carved by the glacier. Once at the tongue of the glacier, put crampons on, have a safety briefing, and then make your way to the real adventure. Head up towards the incredible ice fall (from which Falljokull derives its name), where you will soon be exploring a dramatic terrain, full of frozen ice formations and ice sculptures. Get plenty of photo opportunities while witnessing the rugged and majestic ice fall. Your guide will explain how the glacier was formed and how it keeps changing its shape day after day.

Skaftafell: Ice Cave Experience and Glacier Walking Tour

2. Skaftafell: Ice Cave Experience and Glacier Walking Tour

Explore one of the amazing, naturally formed ice caves on Falljökull glacier, which are only accessible in the winter time, when the meltwater from the dynamic outlet glacier freezes over and leaves behind giant ice tunnels. Begin the tour in Skaftafell, a nature reserve in Vatnajökull National Park. Meet your highly trained and certified glacier guide, who will provide the necessary glacier gear for this expedition — an ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet. Step aboard the glacier bus, which will take you to the glacier terminal face. Listen to a safety briefing and learn how to use the necessary equipment. Follow the guide as you step onto the glacier and navigate through a labyrinth of deep crevasses, beautiful ice formations, and high ridges before you reach the highlight of the day, the deep blue ice cave. Take in the beauty of the cave and capture the memory as a perfect photograph. Listen to how and why these ice caves are formed. After exploring the cave, return to surface and head back over the glacier to the bus before returning to Skaftafell where your tour began.

Spectacular experience and well worth every penny. We did the 5.5 hr hike which allows you to go higher up on the glacier. When you arrive, follow signs for visit parking. Follow the path to the tee- meeting point is to left and visitor center to right. Our tour guide was amazing and worked very hard to make our experience what it was. The tour company provides crampons, a harness, an ice pick, and a helmet. More than likely you’ll need to rent their boots. It was about 700isk per pair. The sole of your boots have to be stiff enough to keep the crampons from falling off, so they inspect your boots in the beginning and let you know if you need to rent or not. The views were incredible. You’re hiking for probably every bit of almost five hours. You stop along the way for photos. Bring snacks and water. If the weather is nice, you’ll likely get warm once you start hiking and want to ditch layers, so having a bookbag for that is good. Can not recommend enough. This is a must do for sure!

The hike was absolutely awesome. Our guide was experienced and professional. He led us well up the icefall in a manner that was efficient and fun. The hike was challenging but we stopped at appropriate times and the guide made sure we were all comfortable before moving forward. I would highly recommend this hike. The glacier is getting smaller by the year and this hike may eventually not be possible.

It was an amazing experience! The guides took us very high in the glacier so we could see all sorts of glacier features like crevasses and little streams running through the ice. They tough us how to walk on the ice with the crampons, go up and down hills and were very friendly and concerned with our safety. Its really beautiful up there and worth it every second!

We did this activity as a family and it was excellent fun. We all felt we had the opportunity to explore the glacier with our guide Barbara.

An amazing experience! Our guide, Max was simply the best. This was our most favorite adventure while in Iceland. Highly recommend!
