Skaftafell: Ice Cave Experience and Glacier Walking Tour

1. Skaftafell: Ice Cave Experience and Glacier Walking Tour

Explore one of the amazing, naturally formed ice caves on Falljökull glacier, which are only accessible in the winter time, when the meltwater from the dynamic outlet glacier freezes over and leaves behind giant ice tunnels. Begin the tour in Skaftafell, a nature reserve in Vatnajökull National Park. Meet your highly trained and certified glacier guide, who will provide the necessary glacier gear for this expedition — an ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet. Step aboard the glacier bus, which will take you to the glacier terminal face. Listen to a safety briefing and learn how to use the necessary equipment. Follow the guide as you step onto the glacier and navigate through a labyrinth of deep crevasses, beautiful ice formations, and high ridges before you reach the highlight of the day, the deep blue ice cave. Take in the beauty of the cave and capture the memory as a perfect photograph. Listen to how and why these ice caves are formed. After exploring the cave, return to surface and head back over the glacier to the bus before returning to Skaftafell where your tour began.

As you admire the hot water spouting from the earth, learn about the history of Iceland from your expert guides. On day 2, visit the waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss where you can walk behind the cascades, and hike on an ancient glacier. The highlight of the day is a trip to the world-famous black sand beach at Reynisfjara. Afterward, explore an Ice Cave and blocks of ice floating in the glacier lagoon of Jökulsárlon. Spend the evening looking out for the stunning Northern Lights, a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. On day 4, follow your guides through the East Fjords in search of native wildlife such as wild reindeer. As you pass by Lake Lagarfljót, where a monster is said to live, learn about the culture and way of life in the nearby small villages. After a cozy night’s stay in a sleepy Icelandic village, explore the geothermal region of Lake Mývatn and see the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir. Then continue to the Námaskarð Pass where the earth boils and bubbles in front of your eyes. On day 6, visit the fjord of Eyjafjörður, spend some time getting to know local farmers at Kaffi Kú, and stop by Hauganes for a Whale Watching Tour. Try some Icelandic delicacies if you fancy it, then stay overnight in Borgarnes. On day 7, explore the capital of the north at your own leisure, before heading out to the Saga Trail to visit Reykholt where the medieval poet Snorri Sturluson lived. On day 8, see the incredible Snæfellsjökull glacier on Snæfellsnes Peninsula and marvel at the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you. Enjoy an optional underground tour of the Vatnshellir Lava Cave. In the evening, you’ll return back to Reykjavik, where your 8-day adventure ends.

What people are saying about Eastern Region, Iceland

Had Michal as our guide and it was great! He offered us their hiking boots as he realised we weren’t wearing the right ones. Taught us how to use and put on the crampons. Very patient in guiding us across the glacier, also very knowledgable bout the ice and Icelandic history. Also accommodated our time on the majestic glacier when we wanted more time on the ice. Also made sure we paced ourselves and didn’t rush anyone. Best tour so far

What a great experience! I was worried that we would either hold the tour back or not be challenged enough, but it was perfect! The views were incredible, Hannak (sp?) was knowledgeable, personable, and very safety conscious. I would 100% recommend this tour, even my hesitant teen enjoyed it!

Hanka did a really good job driving us to the location, guiding us through the ice cave and across the glacier. We learned many new insights on ice caves and glaciers which was super interesting. We felt safe all the time and are grateful for this amazing experience!

Mikel was a great and engaging tour guide! Would recommend this tour to everyone.

I don’t think I have words to describe how wonderful this trip was.
