Full description
This vaults tour takes you beneath the streets of Edinburgh's Old Town into a dimly lit space that many considered to be haunted. Your 1-hour tour visits the vaults of the South Bridge that date back to the 1700s. These are the same vaults mentioned on Most Haunted Live as one of the scariest places on earth. Learn how the vaults been used over the years, and the living conditions endured by the poor and homeless residents who frequented them. The darker side of Edinburgh's history will unfold as you wander through the candle-lit underground area. From your costumed guide, you'll hear about the Burke and Hare murders and the persecution of witches. Discover the characters who stalked the streets of Edinburgh, and the paranormal stories associated with the vaults.  The Haunted Vaults tour option will cover more paranormal and ghost stories. You will also visit our torture exhibition, to explore how and why these items were used.

The tour starts above ground to provide a contrast with the history below. The guide was knowledgeable and brought their own personality to the tour, which given their experience keeps things fresh. Communicated well throughout despite the covid limitations. Not usually my thing at all as I do not like all things creepy - the blend with the realisation of the conditions faced by those using the vaults made it compelling.

I was a bit hesitant as to what to expect, this hesitation was removed from guide Stewart. Stewart was very professional as well as being very comedic, he took the group through the streets of Edinburgh with a great knowledge of the cities history. As we arrived to the entry of the Vaults, Stewart was mindful of health and safety with advisories to all individuals. As we entered the Vaults Stewart had a great deal of the history, he became very animated and involved the whole group. I’m glad Stewart was our guide, not knowing what other guides are like, he just seemed right for the job. Thanks to Stewart our visit to the Edinburgh Vaults were well worth the visit and this will remain with me for sometime to come. Thanks Stewart.

This was a very good tour to experience, not only in the vaults but the information and history we received before we arrived at the vaults was very informative, interesting and given with excellent knowledge and presentation by Fraser. Once inside the vaults Fraser was very respectful towards the people who lost their lives there, with his delivery and manner. He has great knowledge, whit, humour and respect when it matters. Thank you for the tour!
