From El Calafate: Full-Day Tour to El Chaltén

1. From El Calafate: Full-Day Tour to El Chaltén

Immerse yourself in Argentina’s dramatic landscapes and take in panoramic views of mountains, glaciers, and lakes. See the nature that played a major role in Darwin’s and Fitz Roy’s research and discover Argentina’s youngest village, El Chaltén, founded in 1985. Start your full-day tour with a pickup from your hotel in El Calafate. Take the legendary Route 40, which runs alongside Lake Argentino with its blueish-white glaciers.   Cross the Santa Cruz River and hear about Charles Darwin’s and Robert Fitz Roy’s expeditions. Continue to La Leona River, and stop at La Leona Roadhouse, where you can learn the history of Route 40 over a coffee and homemade cake. Walk along the edge of Lake Viedma and see the breathtaking peaks of the Andes mountain range, including Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. After your 3-hour journey, arrive at El Chatén, located in the Southern Andes in a valley where the rivers De las Vueltas and Fitz Roy meet. Admire the young village’s surroundings within the Los Glaciares National Park. Then, decide to either to hike along self-guided trails or remain in the town and enjoy some free time. If you choose to hike a trail, the tour guide will provide you with a map, a lunchbox and advise you on the different trail options to best suit your fitness level. Throughout the year, you can enjoy two short trails to Chorrillo del Salto and Mirador de los Cóndores. From October to April, you can also choose a trail that will take you to Capri Lagoon. If you prefer to stay in El Chaltén, you can enjoy a relaxing period of free time and explore the town. At 5 PM, start your journey back to El Calafate, arriving around 7:30-8 PM. Enjoy a convenient drop-off at your hotel after a full day of discovering Argentina’s nature.

4. El Chalten/Calafate: Laguna de los Tres Trekking Tour

Laguna de Los Tres is without a doubt one of the most famous hikes in Patagonia – also known as the Fitz Roy Trek, because the path will lead you through a dramatic landscape with views of Mount Fitz Roy above the lake.  Be prepared for panoramic views that will take your breath away. You will be trekking through part of an Andean forest, and if you are lucky, you will be able to see the animals that live there.  After the first ascent in the trail, you will be rewarded with a splendid view of De Las Vueltas river sneaking through the valley. The trail then passes through a flat area of woods and gentle valleys.  The third and final stage of the trail is a route of about 1km with a more intense slope. After this challenging section, you will reach the base of Mount Fitz Roy, where the Laguna de Los Tres rests beautifully 1,200 meters above sea level. Here you will enjoy the amazing landscape with Mount Fitz Roy towering above you. This is a perfect spot to have a break with a snack and take pictures. You will retrace your steps to return back to town.

It was an awesome day. We wanted to go on a hike tour and it was the best tour we could book! We made some photo stops along Route 40. Even though I was sad, that we didn´t had enough time to go to Laguna de los tres, the trail we hiked instead was mindblowing.

Very good organization, the bus picks us up at the hotel On time, the guide gives interesting explanations, the route is magnificent and very good hike with exceptional weather however a minimum physical level required is necessary for the hike of 3 hours .

Wonderful trip. The journey there w interesting and our guide provided really interesting and engaging commentary. The town of El Chalten us lovely, the scenery spectacular and the hike was just taxing enough. Faultless experience.
