7. Pompeii: Small-Group Pompeii and Herculaneum Tour

This tour consists of a pleasant walk around the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the ashes of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Your tour will be conducted in English, and will cater only to a small group with a maximum of 15 people. During the infamous eruption, Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried by tons of pumice and volcanic ash, which preserved many things and materials in amazing conditions. Following your tour in Pompeii, you will have time to grab some lunch, or to stroll through the souvenir shops outside the ruins. Afterwards, take the Circumesuviana train leading to Ercolano (a 20 minute trip), where you will start your walk through the ruins. There, discover that Herculaneum is much smaller, but better preserved than Pompeii. While Pompeii had been covered in four meters of ashes, an avalanche of mud 20 meters thick had buried Herculaneum. Second floors of the buildings, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings, and mosaics are still preserved and on display. The site gives a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle which was enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Roman Empire.

We decided to book the entrance ticket only as had done a tour of Pompeii with a guide in the morning - this helped us to identify so much and as such we were able to plan a route and take our time to explore avoiding the large groups which was wonderful. The rooms in the houses in Herculaneum are incredibly well preserved (better than Pompeii) owing to the wind direction on the day of the eruption (our archeologist guide had mentioned) Herculaneum was covered in hot ash instantly so inside the buildings there are many treasures; artwork, timber pieces - doors, balconies, beds etc, mosaics all intact - it's incredible! I preferred this smaller site to Pompeii (although wouldn't have missed Pompeii) as everything is concentrated in a smaller area and the Bath Houses at Herculaneum ... well you need to visit!! Best thing I've ever seen!

Our guide was Luciano leone - it was a fantastic tour and much more interesting for being with someone who had clearly worked as an archaeologist in Herculaneum for a long time. He was so enthusiastic about the area, and his passion was infectious. Well worth the money- we wouldn’t have had half the experience without his knowledge.

Erstklassige Führung durch Herculaneum in englischer Sprache mit einem Archäologen (Luciano) dessen Begeisterung für die Thematik auf einen überspringt. Sehr zu empfehlen!

Very easy to use, tickets worked perfectly and the site was amazing!!!

The guide, Luciano Leone, was brilliant! His English is excellent!
