Vila Viçosa: Guided Marble Art and Archaeology Tour

1. Vila Viçosa: Guided Marble Art and Archaeology Tour

Start the tour in the center of Vila Viçosa, the Portuguese Marble Capital. It's one of the most stunning villages in the country and marble can be found everywhere. Join a local guide who will introduce you to the entire marble industry: from the ground selection strategies to a variety of the final art pieces. Learn why there is such an unforgettable and unique landscape totally shaped by the opening of the marble quarries through the centuries. Then, visit a quarry and see the marble extraction taking place and notice how dangerous it is. Because the marble isn't ready to be applied right after the extraction, you can also expect a visit to one of many factories where the marble will get the final shape before being sent to the market. You will also visit an artisan workshop to watch the handmade shaping of the marble. The different colors of Portugueses marble have been appreciated since the Romans were the rulers of the Iberian Peninsula, and since then the Alentejo marble was used and exported to the whole world mainly from the quarries of this small but cozy town.

The mountain ranges that occupy the center of the province of Badajoz are authentic “ecosystem-islands” in a highly degraded agricultural environment and boast a community of large birds of prey as the main ornithological value. Watch the birds preying at each one of the suggested observation points and walking routes. See native birds such as the Bonelli’s Eagle, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, and Griffon Vulture. Other important species, such as Short-toed Eagle, Eagle Owl, Common, and Lesser Kestrels, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, as well as those that are of more general interest like Black Kite, Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard can also be seen along the tour.   Species like the Black Wheatear, Black-Eared Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Western Orphean, Spectacled, Dartford, and Subalpine Warblers are some of the important species in the crags of this protected area. On the wall of the dam of Alange, sightings of reasonable numbers of Alpine Swift as well as House Martins, Eurasian Jackdaws, etc. are common. Additionally, see other swift species like the Pallid and the rare White-rumped Swift. All over the year, a large group of water birds can be observed in the wetlands of the area. Winter is marked by abundant gulls, cormorants, grebes, and some waders. During the breeding period, you’ll find Gull-billed Tern, Collared Pratincole, and occasionally Whiskered Tern and Northern Lapwing. Other species enrich the community during the migration, which includes Eurasian Spoonbill or Black Tern, among others.   The territory of Iberian Lynx in Extremadura is well worth discovering, so a bird watching tour in this beautiful site should not be overlooked.

What people are saying about Extremadura

It has been an interesting visit, at first they told us a little about the marble deposits that Portugal has and then we went to visit the quarries where it is extracted. It's been an interesting morning. That if, if it is the middle of August, it is advisable not to take central hours of the day since the sun falls very strong.

A little difficult to find the meeting place, but once we were there we were met by a very nice local guide. She told us about the marble varieties and showed us around the marble workshop and in the open pits. Very interesting!

Jose Luis was very good bringing us to places where native and migrating birds can be seen. He is very informative. Highly recommended.

Pleasant welcome, very nice and very professional guides. very interesting visit
