Rome: Trastevere Jewish Quarter Private Walking Tour

3. Rome: Trastevere Jewish Quarter Private Walking Tour

Learn about Jewish life in Rome on a private walking tour that uncovers a more hidden side to the “Eternal City,” and explore the area the Romans referred to as the Jewish Ghetto. Focused on the picturesque Trastevere and Isola Tiberina, the tour also takes in the medieval Campo de' Fiori, one of the oldest markets in the world. Meet at the archaeological site of the Largo di Torre Argentina, site of an enormous religious center of the Roman Empire, where Julius Caesar was stabbed to death, and Pompey's theater was located. Your guide will bring to life Caesar’s theatrical death, before taking you down the medieval alleways that lead to the open air market of the Campo de’ Fiori. Marvel at the beauty of the Renaissance Palazzo Farnese. Then, cross the River Tiber to Trastevere, and get lost in a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets. From the Roman Republic to the end of the Middle Ages, Trastevere was the center of the Jewish community in Rome. Your guide will tell fascinating stories about a peaceful neighborhood that becomes the center of Roman nightlife in the evening. See some of Rome’s oldest churches, including the Basilica di Santa Maria with its golden mosaics. Cross the Tiber again to Isola Tiberina, and learn some of the secrets of Rome's origins. Take a short detour to the open-air theater of the Teatro Marcello, and see what remains of the walls of the ancient temples of the Portico d'Ottavia. Once in the Jewish Ghetto, your guide will show you the modest squares and small alleyways that define the area. A hidden treasure today, it was once home to a walled community that lived under unjust conditions in tremendous poverty. See the Great Synagogue of Rome at the heart of the Ghetto. Although the tour only visits the Synagogue from the outside, it’s easily accessible if you wish to go inside after your tour. End in time for lunch in an area of exceptional restaurants. Your guide will be happy to provide recommendations of venues that serve superb Roman-Jewish kosher food before departing.

Rome: Settings of the Opera Tosca Walking Tour

4. Rome: Settings of the Opera Tosca Walking Tour

Tosca is the most famous opera of Puccini and is set entirely in Rome. It is a story about the love and jealousy between Tosca, a young girl of the Roman aristocracy, and Cavaradossi, a famous painter of the time. Visit the actual sites where the drama takes place. Admire the beauty of central Rome as you "travel" through the main acts of the opera. Begin the tour at the Roman ruins of Largo Argentina and visit the church of Sant'Andrea Della Valle, one of the greatest expressions of 16th-century art. Here you will admire the frescoes by Domenichino and Lanfranchi, as well as the first baroque dome of the city. Discover the location of the jealous outburst of Tosca. Walk through the very popular Campo de'Fiori as you get to the second stop of the tour, Piazza Farnese. This is one of the most fascinating squares of central Rome and is where the second act of the opera is set. Here, learn about the history and mysteries of the beautiful Palazzo Farnese, one of the jewels of Renaissance Rome, and of the two twin fountains in the square. Stroll across Piazza Navona with your guide and marvel at Rome's most beautiful monument, the Pantheon. End your tour at the very famous Castel Sant'Angelo, by the Tiber river and close to the Vatican. Discover the long history of this fort, from its original function as the mausoleum of Emperor Adrian, to its role as a hiding place for archives and treasures of the Vatican. Patrick, our guide was fantastic! He spoke fluent English, was on time in a beautiful car and absolutely delightful. We were very happy to have a car and driver as the weather wasn’t cooperative. It rained about an hour after pick up and through the remainder of the tour. Patrick was always there with umbrellas. He drove right up to most sites so we could easily get out and avoid the rain as much as possible. We toured the catacombs and, again, Patrick had umbrellas waiting for us as we exited. He even bought the girls some bracelets from the souvenir shop. I highly recommend this tour and would do it over in a heartbeat!

The hop on, hop off bus drives to all the tourist locations, the service is great! You can easily enter many places with this and the Roma Pass, it made our life pretty simple.

We managed in the course of the 3 days almost everything that is included in the cards. Amazing package. Price could be lower, but that applies to everything nowadays. :)

Mario was an excellent, intelligent, and informed guide. He was able to tailor his tour to our specific interests and did so with joy, enthusiasm, and good humor.

Awesome, super organized. It's worth it, we have huge discounts, and free access to 3 museums.
