Full description

Enjoy a full-day excursion from Heraklion to Preveli Beach on a bus trip with a local guide. Discover South Crete's Grand River, Kourtaliotikos Gorge, and a colony of Theophrastus palm trees. Sunbathe on the sandy beaches, swim in the turquoise waters, watch for wildlife, or hike regional trails.

Begin your tour with a bus ride from the north coast to Preveli Beach, where you can swim in the turquoise Mediterranean water or stroll the sandy beaches. Look for a rock shaped like a heart, known as The Stone of Lovers, and marvel at the steep cliffs and misty hilltops of nearby Kourtaliotikos Gorge.

Continue your tour by hiking along the banks of the Grand River to discover the Forest full of Theophrastus palm trees. Hike further up the river trail to a canyon and beach where you can further swim, hike, or sunbathe, before heading back down the path to the bus and returning to Heraklion.

I’ll start with the “negative”: - the beach is VERY crowded, finding a place in the shade is impossible in the high season - there’s an oil film in the water near the beach from all the visitors (sunscreen, etc) - you have to swim out further for the water to be clear again - the duration was not 8h as advertised from my location, I left at 8:35am from Stalis and arrived back at my hotel at 9pm - the toilets in the bus didn’t work and I nearly peed myself having to wait 3h until we stopped at a restroom - on the way back, the air conditioner didn’t work over the seats and it was way too hot KEEP IN MIND: You need to descend and ascent 350 stairs in the burning heat without any shade. It’s super exhausting and you have to be somewhat physically fit. NOT suitable for the elderly or disabled. The positives: - the beach and palm forest are BEAUTIFUL, even with a large crowd of tourists - Snorkeling was fun - it’s a once in a lifetime experience and the nature is unique

Beautiful beach quite one of a kind with the palm forest surrounding it. A few caveats however: - the transfer didn't start until 9.45am. A first small bus dropped us off about fifteen minutes to another place to pick up other passengers and change buses for a bigger one. So we arrived quite late at our destination (12:50 p.m.). However, we stayed 4 hours there so the delay had no impact on the time spent there. - the air conditioning of the bus was malfunctioning. - finally, and most importantly: the descent of the 360 natural stone steps and especially the ascent are quite complicated (especially the ascent under the sun). You absolutely need good shoes, which is not indicated when booking.

Pretty good trip overall. Except that instead of taking 2 hours to get there (departure from Stalis) we took twice as long because the bus makes too many detours to take other people. arrive but the palm forest is worth it! Plan shoes to go down and especially go up because it's sporty, also plan something to eat because on site just 1 snack for too many tourists if you don't want to wait..
