Hiroshima: Cycling Tour with Local Guide

1. Hiroshima: Cycling Tour with Local Guide

Cycle around Hiroshima with an English-speaking guide and feel the backstory of the city come to life. Hear about the locals' great reconstruction efforts, even though it was said that nothing could grow in Hiroshima for 70 years. Visit many places and monuments related to the atomic bombing but also sense the energy of the present city as you ride around it in a small group of no more than 10 people. After gathering at the meeting point, make your way to Enko River. Soak up the scenery as your guide tells you about Hiroshima's geographical features and development. Next, head to Hiroshima Castle and Gokoku Shrine to find out more about culture and history in Hiroshima. Once there, see the remains of the headquarters where the initial report of the atomic bombing was transmitted as your guide fills you in with details of the situation and suffering in Hiroshima after the dropping of the bomb. Move on to Peace Memorial Park to discover the Atomic Bomb Dome and more. Hear stories from the locals' point of view rarely seen in museum exhibitions and books. Finally, follow your guide away from the touristic area to explore suburbs like Sendamachi. Find beautiful Hiroshima vigorously revived from the tremendous damage of the atomic bombing while visiting numerous A-bomb heritage sites. Listen to episodes handed down in Hiroshima as you see sights like Miyukibashi Bridge and Kyobashi River. The tour concludes at the original meeting point.

Enter Tokujuji Temple and have a traditional Japanese cultural experience, combining your choice of a tea ceremony, calligraphy lesson, or both, all while wearing traditional Japanese dress. You'll have plenty of time to practice one or more of the Kanji, Chinese Characters, to draw. While you practice, your instructor will make a sample of your name. Once you have practiced the Kanji, practice how to draw your name in Japanese, either in Hiragana or Katakana. Select the best of your work and sign it and stamp it. It will be put into a cylinder to take home. The tea ceremony has 5 steps. First, the tea master will bring in the tools. Then, they will purify the tools, make the tea, clean the tools, and take everything back to the Mizuya, backyard. Enjoy sweets and matcha tea. We loved this experience so much! Spending the afternoon being beautifully dressed, learning about calligraphy and experiencing the tea ceremony with such kind and wonderful hosts made this day the most memorable of our 3-week vacation in Japan! The location is also very beautiful. We learned so much about Japanese culture. We love that we could take back home our calligraphy artwork and now we are looking forward to the beautiful photos in the garden. I will definitely recommend this experience to anybody traveling to Japan! Thank you so much!!!
