Hakone: Hike Japan Heritage Hakone Hachiri

8. Hakone: Hike Japan Heritage Hakone Hachiri

You will hike around 8km in this trip and visit Amasake Tea House, part of the old Tokkaido Highway, Lake Ashi, the Hachiri heritage path, Yamanaka Castle Ruins and Genbe River in Mishima. The transportation between the sites is either on foot or by local bus. The hike is for beginners and mostly on gentle slopes or cobbled paths. In this tour, you will traverse the Hakone Mountain like Edo period travellers and understand the history of Japan using your own feet. You will see Mt Fuji from different angles while you walk if weather permits. This path is very scenic and can be for the beginners. Hakone Hachiri is a Japan Heritage where you can experience how people traveled between Kyoto and Edo (today Tokyo) during Edo period (17-19th century). It is a part of the Old Tokaido Highway including going through the steep slope of Hakone mountains. These days, Kyoto and Tokyo are linked by bullet trains and buses but walking this path can make you understand the history of Japan from a new perspective. 'Hachi' in Japanese means 'eight' and 'ri' is a measurement of approximately 4km these days. Therefore Hachiri means the difficult 32km of mountain path which travellers in the past need to walk in order to reach Edo. In this tour, we will walk some parts of this 32 kilometre pathway. Our Hakone Hachiri tour starts from Hakone Yumoto. We take the bus together to reach Hatajuku where the Amazake Tea House locates. After some Japanese snacks and a cup of energising amasake, we walk on the cobble stone path along the old Tokaido Highway to reach Lake Ashi where we will have a break admiring the lake, Mt Fuji and the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine which is always seen in the postcards of Hakone. Then we walk along the lake and through the famous cedar avenue with trees that are more than 400 hundred years old. After this, we reach the Hakone Checkpoint - the gate where the Edo government controlled the traffic of travelers. Lunch will be followed in a local Japanese restaurant. After lunch, we take a bus to get past Hakone Pass - the highest point which was difficult for the old days travellers. Then we continue the walk on this highway towards Mishima. You will walk past the Mishima Skywalk and take pictures having the skywalk as our background. In Mishima, we visit Genbe River, a part of Unesco's Geopark at the end of this journey. We will finish at around 5pm at Mishima Station where you can catch a bus back to Hakone or continue your journey to other destination.

I enjoyed on this activity as the trip was smooth and weather is perfect. I saw a lot of picturesque view. The group is also very considerate unlike my other experience on a group tour, most of the time we wait for late comers. In addition the tour guide is very accommodating and funny . thanks for great experience Domo Arigato

I gave this experience as a gift for my dad and he loved it! Nik was fantastic and took him to so many places, even if the language barrier was present it was overcome without problems!

It all went very well - timeous departure (despite a number of no shows), comfortable bus, and nice guide with reasonable English.

The guide is very good and she did good job to go beyond. She helped us to catch our train afterwards. Thanks!

Friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. Stunning sights, great food and good options for onsen and shopping.
