Thassos: Island Safari with a 4WD Vehicle and Snack

1. Thassos: Island Safari with a 4WD Vehicle and Snack

Enjoy the convenience of being picked from your hotel in Thassos in a 4WD vehicle. Drive to Kastro, a village with a 600-year-old history. This ancient village once housed a community centered around a castle, but now Kastro has no residents. Explore Kastro’s alleyways. Visit the village’s small church. Take in a spectacular view of Mount Athos. Relax among the peaceful nature surrounding the village. Subsequently, explore the Monastery “Panagouda”. A serine place, where nature blends with the Orthodox religion. A monk lives there for the last twenty-six years all by himself. Leaving the Monastery, we are heading to the Highest pick of the island, Ipsarion mountain in Thassos (1204m high), where we can admire a panoramic breath-taking view of the whole island. On the way downhill from the top, between the wild vegetation and the wonderful images, another stop to have a light snack, in a place of beauty, calming sounds, tranquil and peaceful surroundings. Next stop, at the foot of the island’s tallest peak is the Mountain Village “Maries”, a scenic village hidden among the cliffs, which is sight not a tourist's village. The church in the middle of the village was built back in 1800, for the meeting of the Archangels! After a short walking tour of the traditional alleys of the village, we will enjoy a coffee or a cold refreshment in the typical central square with the characteristic Greek taverns and Kafenia ( Cafe).

First I must say that the drive was very nice and we were able to see some places that would otherwise have remained hidden from us, as many roads are not allowed to drive with a rental car. The driver and the tour guide were very friendly and explained everything well. However, I'm pretty sure that the safari was still called 4x4 Safari with BBQ when I booked it. What we actually got is a cling film wrapped sandwich and a bottle of water. We had to pay for the drinks afterwards in the tavern ourselves. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have been on the Ipsarion, but we didn't see a waterfall. We also spent very little time in Kastro, so you should go there yourself if you are interested. It should also be noted that the journey over hill and dale is not for the faint of heart and you spend more time in the car than outside because the distances between the places are quite long.

Very nice guide, very exciting trip with great new insights. The shuttle service was great!
