This hike is for anyone who wants to experience hiking on the beautiful glacier of Mýrdalsjökull. Located underneath the ice cap is one of the largest Volcanoes in Iceland, Katla which erupted last in 1918. You will meet your guide at the Sólheimajökull parking lot where you will receive all the necessary safety gear and hike towards the glacier. There you will get a safety briefing as well as a tutorial on how to attach the crampons to your high ankle boots. Explore the impermanent glacier formations as well as crevasses and moulins. During the hike, you will see the beautiful views of the area, surrounding mountains as well as some volcanic ash on the glacier. Your guide will be happy to explain these natural phenomena and answer your questions. If you have never been on a glacier, your skilled guide will make sure you will have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Learn by using interactive displays and videos. Become immersed in an experience that blends education with artistic displays of the various natural forces that created Iceland. Go to the Trembling Earth section and learn how diverging tectonic plate movements and rising magma cause frequent earthquakes. Experience the drama of a simulated earthquake. In front of the Fiery Heart of Iceland display, learn about the normal up-flow of magma at the diverging plate boundaries and how they interact with a mantle plume (hot spot) beneath Iceland, pin-pointed in the central highlands. Once the gaseous molten rock in the earth’s crust and mantle, known as magma, is expelled during a volcanic eruption, it is termed lava and tephra (airborne material). There are 30 volcanic systems in Iceland containing many types of volcanoes, with a strong impact on nature and the rapidly developing landscapes. In the Magma Learning Center, get an insight into many volcanic structures. Tephra forms when magma encounters water or ice, or if the gaseous magma is very viscous. The magma splinters into pieces of various sizes that may spread over large areas. Get a panoramic view of 4 large, active but dormant volcanoes and a group of volcanic islands in the Local Volcano section, or from the viewing deck. All are of a different type and nature, and two of them are among the most active and productive volcanoes in Iceland!   

After an early wake-up and pick-up in one of the coolest cities of Europe, take a great 10-hour tour to see Iceland. Make your first stop at waterfall Seljalandsfoss, with no doubt one of the most famous one in the country. This is a waterfall you can walk behind, with a drop off 65 meters and a part of the river Seljalandsá which has its origins underneath the glacier Eyjafjallajökull - the famous volcano that erupted in 2010 and put the world's flights on hold.  Head to the stunning waterfall Skógafoss, one of the largest at a width of 25 meters and drop off 60 meters. It can also be seen from above as there are footsteps that lead above the waterfall. Stop in Reynisfjara for lunch. Try Icelandic meat-soup or many other dishes. Take a walk on a black sand beach and maybe see  puffins if you are lucky. After that, drive to the Village of Vík for a short stop. Sólheimajökull Glacier is between the volcanoes Katla and Eyjafjallajökull, and a part of the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Be dropped off in the parking lot and take a 15 to 20-minute walk along the glacier. On the way back to the city, hear the stories about all the trolls in the rocks, the elves and stop at some secret places, before you arrive back in Reykjavik at around 6:00 PM.

Depart Reykjavik aboard a bus equipped with computer tablets in every seat that allow you to use the GPS-sensitive audio guide in 10 different languages. Stop first at the rugged outlet glacier of Sólheimajökull, which flows from the main ice-cap of Mýrdalsjökull where the mighty Katla volcano lies. Put on the provided crampons to explore the glacier's cracks, crevasses and ice with a certified glacier guide. Hike for 20 minutes to find yourself standing on top of a few hundred meters of ice, yet still only slightly above sea level.  Continue to the stunning waterfall of Skógarfoss, and feel the spray of the water on your face. Climb up the 527 steps of the hill to look at the majestic 60-meter high waterfall from above, and watch the water plummet down on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.  Then, go to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall to discover one of Iceland’s most famous attractions. Get a different perspective of the landscape as you take a walk behind the cascades and look through the wall of water.

The outlet glacier is a rugged, raw and an ever changing environment of ancient frozen water, breathtaking to behold. Start the day with a peaceful walk up towards Sólheimajökull glacier.  After a short but very important demonstration on how to properly use the glacier equipment, head up the riddled outlet glacier ready for your climb. Walking between deep crevasses, amazing ice formations, jagged ridges and spine-tingling sinkholes, feel the vastness of this stunning landscape. Spend a good amount of time trying out various ways of ice climbing in a fun and educating way while you take in the amazing scenery surrounding you. This gives you the perfect opportunity to get that glacier climbing photo you've always wanted.

Head towards the east as far as the village of Vík. Discover the fascinating history of the area which goes as far back as the first settlers in Iceland and holds a lot of secrets that you will explore and enjoy along the way. On the way, visit the iconic waterfalls Skógafoss, where you will get to walk up the 527 steps up to look below you at the astounding view, and Seljalandsfoss, where you will walk behind the waterfall and look out at the incredible view. See the village of Vik, nestled under the mountains and close to some of the most powerful volcanoes in Iceland, Katla and Eyjafjallajökull, which many know for the trouble it caused in Europe when it last erupted.  During the tour, stop at a black sand beach and look out at the ocean. If possible, hike on the glacier Sólheimajökull or go on an ATV ride on the black sand and hunt for the DC-3 plane crash, if there is time for extra activities.

Our trip begins at Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcano. It was labeled “The gateway to Hell” after it's 1104 eruption. That reputation grew with its 1341 eruption. People reported seeing birds fly amidst the fire with some believing it to be swarming souls from hell. Even today some say Hekla has preserved its diabolic status, claiming it the spot where witches encounter the devil!  So if you dare, come with us for this thrilling drive up Hekla volcano. We'll search the signs of these gatherings and while doing so get a gorgeous panoramic view over the highlands and the south coast of Iceland. As we're making our way towards Laugavegur, Iceland´s most popular hiking trail, our F road takes us directly on to the hiking trail in parts, leading us up to a few mountain huts, fx. Álftavatn and Emstur. We then stop at the spectacular canyon Markarfljótsgljúfur. It is believed to have been created in a single flash flood bursting from the volcano Katla in Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Driving beside the glacial river Markarfljót with Þórsmörk and Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the east side is extremely beautiful.  We end our Super Jeep tour in Fljótshlíð, a beautiful farmland where the Njáls Saga took place. In Fljótshlíð you truly get a change to experience Iceland's authentic countryside.
