Full description

Discover the wonders of a salt mine on this exciting guided visit. The tour starts with a descent down the stairs to a depth of 64 meters. The micro-climate of the mine has a beneficial impact on visitors who suffer from asthma and allergies. You’ll be led through a number of chambers and see underground lakes, shrines, and salt monuments. The underground labyrinth covers 9 levels at 64 to 327 meters below the surface of the earth. Nearly 2,400 chambers are connected with sidewalks, for a total length of 245km. The mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978. The first tourist trail in Wieliczka was established at the turn of the 19th century. The trail leads through numerous drifts and galleries where evidence of mining activity has been preserved. You’ll also see examples of sacred art and themed compositions relating to the history of the mine and legends surrounding it. Wieliczka is also home to the world's largest mining heritage museum, with a collection of unique pieces of mining equipment reflecting the development of mining techniques from the Middle Ages until today. The tour ends at a level that’s 135 meters below the surface, and you’ll return to the surface by elevator.

Krakow, Poland is a world heritage wonder in its own right, but to have yet another UNESCO site in such close proximity adds to this delight. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an extraordinary hidden gem, quite literally, as you'll ultimately find yourself 130 metres below ground. Down the 40 flights of steps, you'll find you way into another world, dating back to the 12th Century, with a story and an architectural marvel that lead up to the 21st Century. The Wielickza Salt Mine is not just a testament to a trade that provided great wealth to medieval Poland, but to the forgotten, unsung men who carved out the 300km of mining tunnels, of which this tour will only cover 1%. This tour includes some extraordinary features, including gorgeous vast, open areas, manmade lakes and a wealth of extraordinary carvings that take ones breath away. This marvel is must-see for any visitor to Krakow and Poland overall.

The tour of the Salt Mine was brilliant. The bus provider and Comms was pretty poor. Left hanging around with no real communication as to why or how long we might need to wait. Left on hot bud before return journey with no air con or explanation why we were waiting. In summary - do the tour but avoid this operator.

Stunning little tour, went on for around 1 hour 30 - 2 hours. Having to walk down 350 steps at the beginning was an exercise and a half! Some of the parts down the salt mine, especially the massive chapel were beautiful. Tour guide was brilliant, answered everyone’s questions and enjoyed his job.
