Carcassonne: Private Walking Tour with Cité de Carcassonne

9. Carcassonne: Private Walking Tour with Cité de Carcassonne

The walled city of Carcassonne in Languedoc is world renowned as a spectacular fortified medieval city. But this rocky spur has been occupied since the 6th-Century BC, first as a Gallic settlement and later as a fortified Roman city. The Visigoths seized the city in the 5th-Century, and were followed by the Saracens, who remained in control for a mere 30 years before the Francs expelled them. Restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th-Century, the city fortress was consecrated in 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the former military enclosure of the lower town’s "La Bastide Saint-Louis" is listed as a conservation area. Take a 2-hour private walking tour, personalized to your own schedule and rhythm, visiting the sights you would like to visit. Explore medieval architecture and discover the rich culture that has inspired poets and writers, including William Faulkner. The city is divided into 2 parts; the town and the famous Cité de Carcassonne. Typically we pay more attention to the Cité, but if you would like to visit the town the tour can be customized to suit. What people are saying about Languedoc-Roussillon

This tour timing had to be adjusted due to not enough people buying the tour on the day we wished to take it. It worked out perfectly, with only 4 of us on the tour! We did an afternoon drive out of the city to a vineyard. We had the opportunity to walk the vineyard and learn more about the process. We then were given a wine tasting that was fantastic, followed by the opportunity to purchase bottles. After the tasting, we traveled to the tour guide's family b&b for a dinner that surpassed any expectations we may have had. Bertrand's family are gracious hosts, have a beautiful home, and serve fabulous food.

We had a wonderful time on this tour. Our driver Thierry was very attentive and ensured that we saw all the things on our bucket list. The Flamingo Bird park was spectacular and we saw horses and bulls albeit not in “the wild”. We visited St Marie de la Mer and had plenty of time to climb to the roof of the the Notre Dame church and get some spectacular views of the town and the Mediterranean. Thierry also dropped us off near our accommodation and saved us a train ride. Merci Thierry.

It turned out that it was the two of us and our guide, Frederick. He was extremely knowledgeable and gracious about sharing it. As we had just gone to the Pont du Gard the day before, he didn’t mind skipping that so we could spend more time in the other two places.

Must do! Very personal experience. Amazing views of the French country side and a delicious home cooked meal. Very beautiful and memorable. Information from the tour was informative and delivered in a great way. Wine was delicious!!!

I had my apprehension with joining this tour cos of mixed reviews - but if you’re with Lorenzo, you’re in good hands! Really informative, enjoyable, and ended at the Forum so could then take own time going around the area.
