From Lecce: Full-Day Salento Tour with Professional Guide

1. From Lecce: Full-Day Salento Tour with Professional Guide

Explore Salento and its picturesque towns on a small group, full-day tour from Lecce, traveling by air-conditioned coach with room for no more than 7 passengers. Following a pick-up from your hotel, drive to Galatina, a real gem of art, history and traditions. Of extraordinary beauty is, in particular, the Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, second only to the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi for the presence of many frescoes inside, which were created by Giotto's disciples. Other monuments to visit include the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the ancient "courtyard houses" and the buildings situated in the historical center. Otranto is Italy’s easternmost town and is well-known as “Porta d’Oriente” (literally, “Door to the Orient”). The splendid cathedral, the Church of Saint Peter in perfect Byzantium style, the castle, the towers, the mighty Pelasgi Bastions and the walls that surrounded the whole ancient city make Otranto one of the most interesting cultural destinations in the south of Italy. Santa Maria di Leuca sits on the southernmost tip of the Salentine peninsula, bathed by two seas, the Ionian Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Santa Maria di Leuca is a tourist center famous for its colorful natural landscape that blends in with its majestic architecture. Located on the Japigo promontory is the Basilica of Santa Maria De Finibus Terrae (at the ends of the Earth). From the basilica, you can reach the old port on foot via two ramps of 300 steps each. Gallipoli is considered the pearl of Salento. This Greek city can be divided into two areas: the old city and the new village, where the tourist facilities and modern buildings arise. The old part of the city is located on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a 17th-century bridge. It is surrounded by defensive walls built mainly in the 14th-century. It is characterized by a labyrinthine weave of narrow streets, home to traditional shops of local handicrafts, numerous impressive Baroque churches and aristocratic palazzi. Also worth seeing are the cathedrals dedicated to St. Agatha, one of the best examples of the Baroque in Salento, the Angevine Castle built in the 13th-century and the Greek Fountain, one of the oldest fountains in Italy.

Alberobello, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1996, has the largest number of Trulli in the town of Puglia. With destinations that attract millions of tourists to its narrow streets, Alberobello offers visitors a unique scenario. Two particularly striking districts include: "Rione Monti" with its local handcrafts shops and "Aia Piccola", where the most ancient Trulli and little museums are situated. Martina Franca is in the eastern hills of the Murge. It is a melting pot of history and art.Very charming and quaint, its historical center, with a unique artistic beauty, is presented to visitors in a spectacular maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, charming streets, old churches, valuable Baroque buildings, and wrought iron balconies. Among the structures that characterize the Old Town are the Palazzo Ducale, the  Palazzo Stabile, the Basilica of San Martino, Piazza XX Settembre, and Piazza Roma. Ostuni is known as the “White City" par excellence. It is situated on the Murge Hills with steep walls and its historic center, painted only in white, is a proliferation of plans, of ups and downs, of alleys and stairways, of tangled streets that cross arches and squares. On its summit stands the monumental Cathedral, in late Gothic style. Please note that the order of the visits may change.

3. From Ostuni: Lecce and Gallipoli Round-Trip Tour

Lecce, the Baroque masterpiece of southern Italy, has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture, going back to its foundation. The capital of Salento appeals for a unique combination of folklore, attractions, art and exciting scents. Admire the Cathedral, a wonderful example of baroque style, the former Convent of the Celestines, the Holy Cross Church, a symbol of the baroque style in Lecce built in 1646, the Arch of Triumph, erected in 1548 to pay homage to Charles V, and the churches of Saint Matthew, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary of the Graces. Gallipoli, from the Greek Kallipolis meaning beautiful city, is a fishing village on the coast of southern Puglia. Gallipoli old town, built on an island now connected to the mainland by a bridge, is a picturesque and nice place to stroll. The 17th century Baroque Saint Agate Cathedral is in the center of the town; several interesting churches are along the perimeter of the old town, facing the sea. The walls and bastions surrounding the old town have been built in the 15th century to fend off attacks, especially from pirates. The walls were altered in the 19th century, permitting beautiful views of the sea, port and harbors.

Beautiful experience that made us understand the artistic complexity.

Wonderful experience. Francesca, the guide, managed to transmit her uncontested love for her land, through salient descriptions supported by a great culture. The tour allowed us to understand the variety and the artistic complexity that distinguishes these places, which go far beyond the usual "Lecce Baroque". This territory has such a wide variety that only a guide rooted in the place can transmit. Stefano is also excellent as a driver: precise, punctual and always available. Those for this tour were the best money spent. Thanks again to Francesca, we will carry the memories of this day in the heart. D & S
