Private Tour to Long Tan Former Australian Military Base

1. Private Tour to Long Tan Former Australian Military Base

Arrive in Long Tan, deeply etched into ANZAC folklore. Find out how, in the late afternoon of August 18, 1966, D Company, despite being heavily outnumbered, fought off a large Viet Cong assault of regimental strength during a grueling three-hour battle. The first stop on your half-day tour is the former site of Australia's Nui Dat Task Force Base (Nui Dat SAS Hill). The occupation of Nui Dat required the removal of all inhabitants from within a 4-kilometer radius of the base, therefore the people of Long Tan and Long Phuoc villages were forcibly resettled. Little remains of this military camp today except for the columns of the main gate. The former runway is now a street in the local village, and the old helipad is now a soccer field. Afterward, drive past the location of Horseshoe FSB to the Discourtesy Rubber Plantation. Access to Horseshoe FSB is not permitted due to the continued presence of landmines, but don't miss out on learning about this area. Visit the Long Tan Cross Memorial, a focal point for remembrance, before continuing on to the Long Phuoc Tunnels. Like other tunnels systems found in Vietnam, the Long Phuoc Tunnels included meeting areas, first aid stations, and fighting pits. At around 1:00 PM, start the journey back to Ho Chi Minh city.

From Ho Chi Minh City: Full-Day Long Tan Battlefield

2. From Ho Chi Minh City: Full-Day Long Tan Battlefield

On this full-day tour from Ho Chi Minh you will visit the only Australian military base from the Vietnam War. At 8:00 AM you depart for a 2-hour drive to Ba Ria Vung Tau to visit the former 1st Australian Task Force at Nui Dat. The battle at Long Tan is the most famous battle fought by the Australian army during the Vietnam War. Visit the fully functional air base in a prime location for military strategy. See the evidence of a failed operation with many toxic leftovers after more than 3 decades. In a somber moment, you will visit the Australian Memorial established at Long Tan for the 17 Australian infantrymen and 1 APC crewman killed in action during the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. At 12:00 PM you will enjoy a seafood lunch near the beach before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City.

This is a tour for all Australians and New Zealanders visiting Vietnam. We have no personal connections to the Independence War. Alex, our guide, was personable, knowledgeable and flexible. His indepth knowledge the Long Tan area helped us to “see” the area where the Australian and NZ troops were based and where the battle for Long Tan took place. We were deeply moved by the ceremony he curated at the Long Tan memorial - Alex understands the significance to Australians and was respectful. Depending on the traffic, it’s a 2 hour+ trip from Ho Chi Minh City. Recommended.

Tuan, our guide, was fabulous. He was a really excellent guide, having had firsthand experience of the Vietnam War. He shared his experiences as well as the history associated with the war. Definitely would recommend this tour for all Australians visiting HCMC.

Fantastic private tour with very knowledgeable and experienced guide (Phi). It was great to stand in the footsteps of the Australian Army and especially the guys at Long Tan. Well worth the experience to be a part of Australian and South Vietnamese history.
