Half-Day Kayaking Tour of Vienna

1. Half-Day Kayaking Tour of Vienna

Discover the most quaint part of Vienna, the Alte Donau; a lakeside village which was cut off from the main channel of the Danube in 1870. This is where nocturnal beavers now roam in a section of the river. See how Vienna maintains its long-established reputation as a center for diplomacy, politics, and international relations as you paddle past the United Nations, along with several of the city’s other most important contemporary buildings. This view of the city is later contrasted with the cute lakeside huts which adorn the water’s edge to give vibrant bursts of color to the lakeshore. You will most likely be sharing the water with local rowers, the odd fisherman, and plenty of swans and ducks along the way. The Alte Donau is a watery oasis in the middle of the city, perfectly designed for further investigation via kayak. If it's hot, you can also take a break for a swim in the clean lake waters while making new friends, getting some sunshine, and being active. You'll also get loads of tips from the guide if you want to keep investigating ‘new’ Vienna for a bit longer. You could grab lunch or a cocktail at Vienna’s self-styled ‘Copa Beach’, swim off one of the island’s riverside pontoons, visit the Danube Tower with its 360° views over Vienna’s skyline, or explore the charming Danube Park, all within walking distance from the end point.

Vienna: Wachau Valley Private Kayak and Wine Tour

2. Vienna: Wachau Valley Private Kayak and Wine Tour

Explore the natural beauty of Wachau Valley as you travel by kayak along the Danube on a private tour. See the incredible scenery, enjoy a delicious tasting of local wine, explore picturesque Durnstein, have a tasty lunch, and more. Meet at the main entrance of Vienna’s Westbahnhof railway station before a one-hour train journey to Melk, home of the world-famous baroque abbey, or meet there directly. Once there, prepare the kayaks and receive a safety briefing. It’s then time to travel by kayak along the Western Wachau, where the hills are carpeted in trees with castles and palaces sitting atop many of the valley’s highest peaks. You’ll be in awe of the valley’s natural beauty from your position in the heart of the Danube. The charming village of Spitz, approximately halfway through the valley, marks the beginning of the wine region. Noted for its dry Rieslings, Austria’s signature Gruner Veltliner, and the wonderfully unique and earthy Neuburger, visit one of the town’s finest local producers for an extensive tasting, before lunch (own expense) in a local hamlet. After this, paddle further east and see the steep valley landscape transform into visually stunning rows of dry stone walls and vines, separated into hundreds of individual vineyard plots. End the journey in picturesque Durnstein, the gem of the valley. You can climb the famous castle ruins or wander through the village, taking in its old-world medieval charm. After a full day of activity, arrive back in Vienna around 7 PM, although the precise time of arrival will depend on our progress over the course of the day – you won’t want to rush through the beautiful nature.

The kayaking tour was a surprise birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had so much fun! James was a great guide, experienced, he's been giving kayaking tours and wine tours in Vienna for a couple of years now and took care of everything for us - we got to just enjoy the water and the tour of the city from the Old Danube. l am a local in Vienna, but found the tour to be a real treat providing me with new insights into my city. It was a relaxing, beautiful day out on the water, paddling, swimming and learning about Vienna. I liked our small group of people on the tour and fell in love with my city in a whole new way. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful morning spent with James. He is an excellent guide, full of enthusiasm and knowledge of Vienna. It was lovely to get away from the crowds and spend a few hours in nature paddling in the pristine waters of the old Danube. It was our favorite part of our European trip. Don’t miss out on this wonderful experience!

This is vacation in Vienna! Great tour on the old Danube. Informative, sporty and yet very relaxing. John does an excellent job of showing the livable side of the city of Vienna. We can recommend this tour to everyone who wants to spend their holidays in the city and has already walked enough through museums, shops and streets.

We booked this tour with James and did not know what to expect. Once we arrived at the old Denube, James shared is knowledge, insights with a good sense of humor, turning this in to one of the highlights of our trip to Vienna
