Full description

Discover the edge of the Sahara Desert on a 3-day budget tour from Marrakech, and explore the dramatic landscapes of the Dades Valley and Kasbah of Ourzazate. Ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi by camel, and sleep at a desert camp surrounded by high sand dunes.

Day 1: Marrakech - Ait Ben Haddou - Tinghir

After an early departure from the Marrakech hotel, your journey begins by crossing the High Atlas Mountains past one Berber village after another to the UNESCO world heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, famous for its Kasbah and fortified village, and previously used as a set for some famous Hollywood epics as well as a backdrop for some fashion magazines photo shoots.

After some leisure time to explore the village with its Kasbah, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, then continue your drive through Ouarzazate, known as the Gate of the Sahara and onto Boumalne Dades, admiring the scenic drive along the road to Tinghir, where you can enjoy dinner and an overnight stop.

Day 2: Tinghir - Todgha Gorges - Merzouga

Following breakfast, depart your hotel and drive to the dramatic Todgha Gorges, pausing for some free time to explore the canyons and enjoy lunch at a local café. Continue to Merzouga to meet your camel caravan.

Then, experience the Erg Chebbi dunes on camelback and watch the sunset change the color of the sand. Reach your desert camp before nightfall and enjoy an authentic Moroccan dinner under the stars. Local nomads will provide the entertainment and show you how to play the Tam Tam drums. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stop.

Day 3: Merzouga Ouarzazate - Marrakech

Following an early wake up to watch the sunrise before breakfast (optional), a driver will be waiting to pick you up for the transfer back to Marrakech. Stop half-way for lunch in Ouarzazate. You can also book upgrades for the night in the Bedouin camp as an optional extra. Upgrade to the deluxe desert camp with a luxury private tent complete with ensuite shower, bathroom facilities, and 5* amenities. These upgrades need to be booked per person.

The trip went very well. The driver, Omar, was lovely. Most guides too. Note, however, that the night “in the desert” is not really in the desert but 100m from the nearest town…. Also note that the lunch restaurants, which remain at our expense, are expensive (100 each time) and of average quality. For the rest, nothing to say!

ABSOLUTELY worth it! I was travelling with my 15yrs old brother and it was a great fit for him. The experience was truly made remarkable by Said, our guide and driver, and the fact that we were a very small group - there were 8 of us. It's definitely a lot of driving - mostly on days 1 and 3. If you're usually car sick, get some tablets to avoid sickness in the Atlas part of the trip and you'll be just fine. The car is extremely comfortable, with good AC, Said is a great driver, and everyone ends up napping most of the way anyway. Surprisingly, you will find time goes by very fast on the drives. For the price, it's wonderful how much you end up doing and seeing. The landscapes are amazing, and day 2 is definitely the most packed and enjoyable one of the trip. We recommend sleeping outside in the desert to fall asleep under the stars. The slight down point are the lunches, at quite expensive and not particularly good venues. Would still 100% recommend the experience!

Definitely worth an experience. I had booked the luxury upgrade, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it because you are separated from the group and spend the evening alone in isolation. The private camel ride through the Sahara was really incredible and a once in a lifetime experience, the private dinner afterwards is nice too, but I would have preferred the company of the group here. You should also be aware of how much time you spend on the bus to get to the actual highlight (the return journey consists of a 10-12 hour bus ride). If you are prepared, the tour is definitely a great way to visit the Sahara. Our driver Youssef was helpful and took good care of us. Our guide through the nomadic villages was also informative and funny. Although this is a "sales tour", no one is forced to spend money here. Restaurants are also freely selectable for the stops for lunch.
