Full description
During your visit to Hawaii, the birthplace of surfing, take a great opportunity to learn how to surf. Experience the calm waters of West Maui which offer perfect conditions for beginner surfers. Take part in a group lesson with a maximum of 5 surfers, which means you will have a ton of opportunity to learn from your professional surf instructor. Before you start, get you geared up with a surfboard, long-sleeve UV rash guards, and water shoes. Leave everything you do not want to get wet or whatever that does not float in the cubicles provided at the surf shop. On the beach, have a brief 15-minute 'land lesson' to go over safety measures and procedures. When your group is ready, head into the water to get started. Each surfer has their own turn to ride a wave and learn to surf. After your wave is complete, you will head back to the designated waiting area until the instructor signals for your turn again. The first few rides usually take some time, but it starts to move faster once everyone starts to get the hang of things. As an added bonus, there will be a professional photographer taking close up shots throughout your lesson.  The group surf lesson is 2 hours in total from the time you leave the surf shop to when your instructor signals you back in from the water. If you do finish early, there is a beach to sit on and wait until the rest of your class is done. Once the class is over, everyone will carry their surfboards back to the shop and then head back to the beach to shower off in fresh water. Return all your surf gear back to the shop and have an opportunity to check out your surf lesson photos which are available for purchase.

For my daughters 16th birthday we did lessons for her and my 10 year old . I was pretty nervous since my 10 year old was definitely the youngest one there . They let me know if she was holding the group back they would bring her back on the beach (which I was okay with ) she stood up and surfed along everyone the entire time ! They both had so much fun and it was the highlight of our trip . Both girls said it was the best thing they did the whole time we were in Hawaii . Their instructor , Tavner , was incredible and would highly recommend ! Also , there is an option to purchase pictures . I did not initially purchase pictures since I brought a camera , but they are pretty far from where I was standing to get a good picture ( I have a old camera ) luckily he ended up taking pictures of my girls and let me purchase at the end , I would recommend this option as you get a lot of pictures for a small price

It was a bit disorganized because there were so many participants as well as other companies in the same vicinity. Most of us enjoyed the opportunity but trying to figure out which guide to go to was a bit confusing because of the numbers of people out there! My son cut his hand pretty good on first trip out so never even went again. A partial discount would have been nice since he really didn’t get to participate. But they didn’t even give us the option. :-( I understand it’s at your own risk but courtesy goes along way in a business!! Especially when I paid for 8 participants. They definitely made their money off of us to refund my son who didn’t get to participate!! Surf guides were super nice and easy to talk to. I would try again but maybe with private lessons or a smaller group. My younger son said the instructor from the same company (but different group) yelled at him for going to wrong instructor. Thought that was a bit unprofessional considering the amount of people out

Our instructor Kealii was very supportive and informative! We took surfing lesson last year with a different company that was not nearly as informative as Royal Hawaiian Surf. I watched all of the instructors help support each student stand before releasing the surfboard. Each student found success standing up on the board and catching a wave! It’s was an amazing experience!!
