1. Frogmore Plantation: Historical Cotton and Plantation Tour
Learn about the history of the cotton industry with a visit to Frogmore Plantation. Take a 90-minute walking tour around the property with an expert guide who will tell you about the evolution of the plantation from the 1790’s up to the Civil War. During the tour your guide will explain the realities of cotton cultivation, of how the plantation operated, and the duties required of slaves. There are 8 historic buildings at the property, one of which holds a steam gin that dates back to 1884. The children’s center shows the lives of children at the time, both enslaved and free. With a visit to the cooking cabin, your guide will explain the blending of African and European influences on southern cuisine that continues to this day. Other stops at the plantation include a 1790’s cabin, a smokehouse, and an 1800’s plantation church. At the conclusion of the guided tour, you may explore the rest of the grounds at your leisure.
