Siena: Half-day Guided Hike to Monteriggioni

3. Siena: Half-day Guided Hike to Monteriggioni

Give your mind a rest from the noise of the crowded towns, follow your expert guide on a pleasant walk along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrim route for the first time plotted down by the Arcbishop ‘Sigeric the serious’ of Cantebury on his return from Rome in the 9th century and considered the main artery to Rome throughout the middle ages. This route, that has for centuries been a highway of men and emotions, a spiritual pilgrimage and a wealthy trade route, has been forgotten and almost entirely relegated to history by the modern paved car roads. Only recently the route has been brought back from the grip of modernity and is today enjoyed by many pilgrims and hikers alike. Experience the beauty of the mixture between the Tuscan countryside and the glory of its medieval past, still present in it's wonderfully preserved castles, villages and ruins.  See the Tuscany you would never want to miss before returning home, pass through forests and fields, vineyards and olive groves from Siena to the imposing fortress of Monteriggioni. A medieval walled town located on a natural hillock, built by the Sienese in the thirteenth century as a bastion of defense in their wars against Florence.  Once in Monteriggioni, enjoy a guided tasting of local organic wines before saying goodbye to your guide for the end of the tour. Feel free to explore the village and the surrounding area at your own pace. You will be given a bus ticket to return to Siena.

The guide (Kike ?) gave us the necessary information for each spot we visited and gave some useful tips along the way. The driver (Leonardo) was the perfect and smoothest driver I ever had on a tour. The bus was clean and air-conditioned (which was important on a hot sunny day). We stayed exactly the right amount of time at each spot (although a thorough visit of Siena would require at least a day in my opinion so don't expect to see everything, this is a "bullet point tour"). The highlight was the meal and wine tasting experience (which is one and the same thing). The meal had three courses as promised and did fill us up for the next leg of the journey. The wine was great and the "entertainer" at that spot was amazing ! The cat at the entrance was also a great addition

We enjoyed our trip and wish we could repeat it already! We didn't take extra tours as we wanted to explore on our own and not walk in big groups. The time in each stop was enough, maybe Siena needed some more. The lunch was nothing fancy but good value. My only criticism concerns the winery, as all the glasses were different then I got the smallest and hence the twice as little wine with each tasting. At least my neighbours in my table had a nice laugh about it!

A fantastic day was had by all. Well worth the money, our guide was amazing. Each place was as spectular as the next. Lunch at Chanti was delicious and wines, vinegars etc, were explained really well by the host.

Can really recommend. Good trip, enough time. Don't forget to take the tour in sienna. It's really amazing!

Nice tour, Lisa is the excellent tourguide. Definitely deserves for the money and I recommend.
