Meet your guide, and sail to the island of Delos, revered in Greek mythology as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Now considered one of the most important ancient archaeological sites in the Eastern Mediterranean, Delos was once a prosperous place of thriving trade and a center of culture and religion in the 8th to 1st century BCE. Upon arrival on the island, follow your guide through the entire ancient city. Encounter the old market places and public squares, along with the Temple of Apollo and Sanctuary of Artemis. Take a look at the old city and amphitheater, and walk down the celebrated Terrace of the Lions, where between 9 and 12 statues of marble lions guarded the Sacred Way. Look inside the museum to see artifacts excavated over the centuries, including sculptures from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman era, a collection of vessels from all periods and small items from everyday life. Enjoy a refreshment at the café next to the museum before boarding the ferry back to Mykonos. Overall great experience. Amazing historic sites. Very friendly guide, competent and entertaining. She knew everything and answered all questions with patience. Spoke perfect English. Minus one star because of the boat. It was a big and very old ferry with lots of tourist. I was under the impression, we would go with a smaller sail boat with less people on board. The price was relatively high, but that's normal for Mykonos. Tipp: Bring a hat and enough water, there is no shadow and it's getting hot.

I was on the fence about visiting this island during my time In Mykonos, but I am so happy I went. I had no idea just how much history was involved with Delos and learned way more than I thought. Only down side was the museum on the island was closed for renovations, but was so much to explore that I don’t think I would have had time anyway.

The tour starts and ends with Alexandra, who was an excellent guide with tons of knowledge about the history and mythology of Delos. She answered every question and showed us as much as she could in the time allowed. There is no shade on Delos, so bring plenty of water and wear a hat and good walking shoes as you journey back centuries to view the archaeology of a thriving island in ancient times.
