Leavie behind Corinth canal and after a 1 hour drive you will enter the region of Argolis, land of Homer’s Golden Mycenae, a Unesco World Heritage site, and go uphill to visit the archaeological site, home of the mythical king Agamemnon. The next stop is picturesque Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece, with its Venetian Palamidi fortress and the fortified islet of Bourtzi  located in the middle of the harbor. Meet your tour leader your hotel inside the city limits or at the Land Gate, ready for your adventure in the venetian city.  Pass by the point where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first ruler of Greece, was killed and will end up in the Syntagma Square, where Venetian and neoclassical buildings dominate your surroundings. Leave the Isthmos and driving to the Ancient Corinth, where St. Paul lived for almost two years doing very important misionary work. There is the church that has the 1st Letter to the Corinthians written in four languages, Greek, Arabic, French and English. Ancient Corinth was an important state city during the ancient years, the richest and most famous port in ancient Greece. There you can visit both Greek and Roman arhitectures at the archaeological site and the museum. Then, the driver will take you to Mycenae, the golden city of King Agamemnon, the one who united all the Greek cities to fight for a common purpose against Troy. Mycenae was the city from which the Mycenaean civilization started and has an archaeological site. There you will visit the burial Royal Tombs of the kings and queens, the cyclopian walls, the Lion Gate, and the treasury of Atreas,the Cyclopean Walls. Go on to Nafplion, the first modern Capital of Greece from 1821 till 1834. You will see the Castle of the city, Palamidi, as well as Mpourtzi the island fortress, the first defence line of the port. Leaving Athens behind we drive on the coastal road towards the West. Our first stop (after approximately one hour) is the Corinth Canal. There we’ll make a short stop, enough to see the Canal, (approximately 6 km long connecting the Aegean with the Ionian Sea), take photos and visit the local cafeteria. Driving through the winding roads of Corinthia and Sofiko, we are going to visit Epidaurus, famous for it’s ancient theatre and the sanctuary of Asclepios. The sanctuary of Asclepios was a healing centre as well as a cultural centre in ancient times. Epidaurus was built around the 4th Century B.C. and has a multitude of buildings most famous of which is the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The Theatre of Epidaurus has reached our days almost intact. The view, aesthetics and acoustics of the theatre are breathtaking. It’s still in use today and hosts carefully selected theatrical plays, concerts, and festivals during the summer. For an actor to perform in the Theatre of Epidaurus is considered the greatest honour and the ultimate acknowledgement of his or her talent, if he wins over the tough audience. After concluding our visit to Epidaurus we’ll drive through the plain of Argolis, among thousands of olive trees and vineyards, thirty minutes later we’ll arrive to the picturesque town of Nafplion (First capital of modern Greece, from 1829 to 1834). Nafplion is the most ancient city in Greece. According to the myth it was founded by Theseas who first conceived the idea of organized cities where people could live together. The city lies under the imposing rocks of Palamide the most formidable Venetian Castle in the Eastern Mediterranean. The smaller Castle of Acronafplia (where the ancient city was founded) crowns Naflion and at the entrance of the harbor, in the Argolic Gulf, there is yet another, third Castle, Bourtzi, situated on a small islet. Whether you decide to have lunch in the old medieval quarter, with the narrow, stoned paved streets, or by the port, with the view of Bourtzi, Nafplion is the best choice for lunch in this trip. Driving afterwards among endless farms of orange trees we’ll arrive at the archaeological site of Mycenae. Mycenae, 'Rich in Gold', was the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, who dominated the Aegean Sea after the distraction of the Minoan Empire. The city looks out across the plain of Argos to the sea. It’s elevated position and it’s huge Cyclopean Walls, offered protection from surprise attacks by pirates and enemies. At the peak of its power (1300 B.C.) the population leaved around the fortress where the Royal Family had its Palace. The Palace, symbol of power of the Mycenaean rulers, was reached by a large ramp beginning at the Lions Gate. Outside the fortress lie the impressive beehive tombs including that ascribed to Agamemnon known also as the Treasury of Atreas. After concluding our visit to Mycenae we’ll start the return trip to Athens. Your personal local driver, will provide commentary in fluent English, en-route, before you visit the sites.

This tour will take us to the major sites of the Peloponnese, both ancient and modern, from the Homeric city of Mycenae to the Corinth Canal. The kingdom of Mycenae was one of the first great centers of the Greek culture and settlement on this site dates back to the second millennium BC. According to Homer, Mycenae was the seat of Agamemnon, who led the Greeks against the Trojans to take back Helen, the wife of his brother Menelaus. The ruins of the ancient city are famous for the amazing “Cyclopean walls” - so named because the later Greeks thought that only a Cyclops could move such huge rocks into place. You will see the Lion Gate, which formed the entrance to the royal court and palace. Nearby there are the tombs of legendary figures such as Aegisthus and Clytemnestra. We will also travel to Epidaurus in order to see the famous theatre there. Built in the 4th century BC, it is famous for its acoustics - they are so perfect that words spoken on stage can be heard perfectly wherever you are in the audience. Stepping forward in history, we will see the Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, built by the Venetians and famous for supposedly having 999 steps. According to legend, there were once 1000 steps leading to the castle, but one of them was crushed by Theodoros Kolokotronis, a leader of the Greek war of independence, when celebrating a victory against the Ottomans. Finally, our journey to the Peloponnese will take us across the Corinth Canal. Completed in 1893, a huge feat of technology at the time, it finally opened up the shipping route between the Saronic Gulf and the Gulf of Corinth and separated the Peloponnese from the mainland, effectively turning it into an island.
