On the way to Mycenae, see the famous Corinth Canal and make a quick stop to admire this engineering marvel that connects the Aegean and Ionian seas. Continue towards Mycenae, one of the most important cities of ancient Greece. Visit the Mycenaean Acropolis, the tomb of Agamemnon, and the ruins of the Cyclopean walls that protected this mighty city. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae. Continue on to the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, a 4th-century theater which is one of the best-preserved Classical Greek structures in existence. It is renowned for its amazing acoustics; a coin dropped in the theater's center can be heard from the highest seat. The theater seats up to 14,000 people and its entrance is flanked by restored Corinthian pilasters. It's now used for performances of Ancient Greek drama during the annual Hellenic Festival. Finally, make a stop in the picturesque city of Nafplion, which was the first capital of Greece after Independence and has been a major port since the Bronze Age. Its position was so strategic that the city has 3 fortresses: the massive fortress of Palamidi, the smaller Akronafplia, and the water castle Bourtzi on an islet west of the old town. Stroll through the attractive narrow streets, and admire the elegant Venetian houses, neoclassical mansions, and quayside cafes. After driving for one hour from Athens, you will discover the famous Corinth Canal. The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth, and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making the former peninsula an island. The canal elevated Piraeus’ status as a major Mediterranean port, a project which spanned many centuries. Cut through solid rock, the canal is more than 6 kilometers long and 23 meters wide, with its vertical sides rising 90 meters above the water. You will spend approximately 30 minutes at the canal, with time for photos and refreshments. Following the canal you will continue towards Mycenae, one of the most important cities of ancient Greece. You will see the Mycenaean Acropolis, the tomb of Agamemnon and the ruins of the Cyclopean walls that protected this mighty city. After approximately 1.5 hours at Mycenae, you will have the option to stop at a nearby village or town for snacks or a quick lunch. The Nemea region of Peloponnese is a highly recommended trip both to savor the unique local wine varieties paired with food delicacies, and to see some interesting cultural spots that will introduce you to the history of Greece. Nemea is approximately 120 kilometers and only 1 hour away from Athens. It is worth visiting to taste a high quality Greek Agiorgitiko PDO red wine. Agiorgitiko, a name that comes from St. George (Agios Georgios in Greek), is one of the two most recognizable Greek red varieties along with Xinomavro of Naoussa (located in northern Greece). The area is divided into three sub-zones, classified by altitude where you can find various wineries and taste the different styles of Agiorgitiko together with other Greek wine varieties. Other varieties cultivated in the area are the pink-skinned Moschofilero and Roditis, the white Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. They also produce red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. A beautiful tour through the nemean countryside to one of the most beautiful archeological sites I have ever visited, followed by visits to wonderful vineyards. The tastings were wonderful, the guides informative, the trips through the cellars and production lines a highlight and the food was also some of the best I tasted. Would fully recommend. The guides were wonderful people and we loved the trip. Would take it again.
