10. Naples: The Bourbon Tunnel Guided Tour with Entrance Ticket

See enchanting scenery unfold before your eyes in a secret place full of history and atmosphere on a guided tour of Bourbon Tunnel in Naples. Choose the Via delle Memorie tour option to enrich your trip by walking the historic underground route. The Bourbon Tunnel was built in 1853 by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who, concerned about the outbreak of the rebellion, asked for an escape from the Royal Palace to the barrack in Via della Pace, now Via Morelli. The work was not completed and, during World War II, the tunnel was used as a military hospital, later becoming the Hall Judicial Deposit. The war left its mark even in the subsoil: find handwritten messages of wishes and desolation of those who lived there. In the tunnels, find statues dating back to the fascist period and an exhibition of cars and motorcycles, abandoned for years and then freed from the rubbish. Add the option to walk the Via delle Memorie, an underground route carved out of the tuff. This tour starts from the Palazzo Serra di Cassano basement. See historical finds from WWII, 16th century caves, and a water tank from the 17th century, later used as a bomb shelter. End your tour with a walk through the last section of the tunnel.

I was unsure if it was worth going to Pompeii for the day as it was an all day excursion with my family. I am so glad we went, our tour guide, Enrica and our driver, Marco made the trip relaxing and enjoyable. When we arrived at Pompeii, we were greeted by a knowledgeable guide specifically for the archeological site and we learned quite a bit about life in Pompeii prior to the eruption of Vesuvius. It is was all pretty fascinating and even my teenage son was equally interested. We would’ve preferred ti hike Mt. Vesuvius but unfortunately this option was not available in Feb. but we did get to explore Naples a bit. Highly recommend, a nice way to break up our visit to Rome.

Peter was an excellent guide. He looked after everyone and gave us the best history lesson I’ve ever had. Very interesting and enjoyable. For me I would have preferred half an hour more in Pompeii rather than the longer time in Positano but that’s just personal choice. An excellent day.

I learned so much history from our guide Mikael. He is a trained archeologist so he was able to give correct information on what are myths and truths about Pompeii, as well as explain the unknowns.

We had an amazing time. Our guide Barbara was great fun and full of knowledge about Pompeii and Positano.

It was a long day! But Barbara has showed courtesy all the time. Such a great personality!
