Full description

Explore New Orlean's history on a guided tour of Oak Alley Plantation, named for the double row of southern live oak trees that date back to the 18th century. Learn all about plantation life from your traditionally-dressed tour guide and see antique farm machinery up close.

Benefit from pickup at your accommodation in New Orleans, and then make your way to the Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie for your guided walking tour of its grounds.

Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Oak Alley was named after the 28 huge oak trees that line the road leading up to – and pre-dating – the plantation house.

Admire the Greek Revival architecture of the main plantation house, built in the 19th century for one of the wealthiest families of the South. See original features, including antique farm machinery, and avail of amenities such as a restaurant and souvenir shop.

Throughout your tour, be led by a guide wearing authentic plantation-style clothes and hear about the first example of Antebellum restoration along the legendary River Road.

The plantation experience was worthwhile and we had plenty of time to do the tour of the house (no photos allowed) and wander the grounds and take in the exhibits of the quarters of enslaved people. Unfortunately our driver was rather unimpressive- he seemed quite unsure of any history he was trying to recount and played music very loud, but only about 30 seconds of a song before interrupting or changing it to something else.

Oak Alley was amazing!!! The whole experience was totally worth it, especially with our awesome driver, Gary! He pointed out so many cool places on the way and had so many great stories. The drive was so scenic & fun, it was like a sightseeing tour outside of the city. The cherry on top was Oak Alley. The trees & lush greenery were unreal. We took a bag lunch and sat on the picnic benches in the shade and couldn’t help but realize this is what people did back in the day. The grounds were beautiful. Totally worth it, especially with a ride there and back from our hotel. One thing I noticed was a lot of ppl didn’t tip our driver, Gary, and that really upset me! Tip your drivers, people!!!

Mini bus picked us up almost an hour after our designated time and then drove us to the big bus which was right in front of our hotel. We could have saved the walk to the pick up hotel (I’m wearing a knee brace) and just gotten on there. We were sent an email with a pick-up time between 8-8:15. We actually got picked up at 8:55. Bus ride was like being on a roller coaster because the ride was so bumpy.
