The park was opened on May 31, 1952. It evolved from a nature park with a playground and a Fairytale Forest into a full-sized theme park. It now caters to both children and adults with its cultural, romantic, and nostalgic themes, in addition to its wide array of amusement rides including six roller coasters and four dark rides. It is the largest theme park in the Netherlands and one of the oldest theme parks in the world. It is twice as large as the original Disneyland park in California and predates it by three years.

The Efteling is an amusement park and recreation complex in Kaatsheuvel, a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In addition to the amusement park, the entire World of Efteling includes a theater (Efteling Theater), two hotels (Efteling Hotel and Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel) and two holiday parks (Efteling Bosrijk and Efteling Loonsche Land). Efteling is the largest amusement park in the Benelux in terms of visitor numbers and surface area. It is one of the most visited theme parks in Europe and in 2020, after finishing behind the French Disneyland Paris and the German Europa-Park, in 2020, it was even the most visited theme park in Europe. Efteling has been awarded several prizes, including the Pomme d'Or for the "best leisure park in Europe" (1972) and the IAAPA Applause Award for the "best amusement park in the world" (1992).
