2. Treeking to Knuckles & adventure camping in Meemure

Start your day bright and early with pickup from your hotel in Kandy, Habarana, or Dambulla. Make your way to Hunnasgiriya to meet your nature guide and start your camping adventure to the Knuckles Mountains and Meemure Village, part of the central highlands world heritage site. Arrive at the campsite for breakfast and begin your expedition to Meemure village. Take part in water activities and discover the traditions of the local people. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan lunch at a village house and journey back to the campsite. Arrive at the campsite for evening tea. Later, gather around the bonfire and enjoy a bbq dinner before heading to bed. Take in both the culture and history of Sri Lanka as well as the natural beauty of it's wildlife on this full day tour from Negombo. First visit the world heritage site of Dambulla Cave Temples, before enjoying an afternoon on safari spotting elephants, deer, buffalo and assorted birds. Head to Dambulla and visit the Cave Temple, which is a vast isolated rock mass 500 feet high and a mile around the base. In the first cave is a recumbent image of the Buddha 47ft long, cut out of the rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the walls and the ceiling are the oldest here but they were painted over in the Kandy period. In the second cave, the finest and largest of all, there are 150 life-size statues of the Buddha in various postures with a few statues of Gods and Kings. The ceiling is also covered with frescoes, which depict great events in the life of the Buddha and landmarks in the history of the Sinhalese people. Have a break to enjoy lunch. Then explore the Kaudulla National Park on a jeep safari. In the Polonnaruwa District, 6,900 hectares include the Kavudulla Wewa and surrounding jungle area, was opened in September 2002. Kavudulla is home to a large herd of elephants, Sambhur, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, a range of reptile species, and a large number of bird species. The elephant population found here far exceeds those found in other parks.

Get an early start on the first day and hop in an air-conditioned vehicle around 6 am with your experienced driver guide. Head first to the stunning Golden Temple of Dambulla, a cave temple complex built in the 1st century BC. View the ancient murals depicting the life story of Lord Gautama Buddha. Walk through the elaborately-carved entrance framed by the paws of a lion (appropriately named "Lion Rock"). View the beautiful, unfading murals that brought Sigiriya its fame. Climb the steep staircase to see the terraced gardens and still-working cisterns, and walk through the tunnels leading to the palace as you get a feel for times long past. Then visit a local village in Sigiriya and immerse yourself in Sri Lankan village life. Go on an oxen cart ride and experience the village farmer's point of view. Boat across a calm lake by catamaran and walk through golden fields ripe with the harvest of the paddy. Watch a traditional cooking demonstration that teaches you the basics of Sri Lankan cuisine.
