Full description

During this experience, you'll be taken through the Valley of Tlacolula to Santiago Matalan. During the ride, you'll be introduced to the culture of mezcal and its geographical context. Once in Santiago Matatlán, you'll be visiting an agave plantation to learn about these plants, their life cycle, varieties, and uses. Then, visit two different mezcal distilleries to see real production going on. From a home scale family-owned business with a long tradition of making mezcal in a rustic way to another way of production more sophisticated, yet artisanal.

As each maestro mezcalero gives a personal touch to every batch, each tasting on-site means immersion in the mezcal culture.

Afterward, you'll make a stop for lunch in a nice and neat last distillery with a great local cuisine restaurant. By this point of the trip, you'll already know how to taste mezcal as an expert. The premium quality mezcal you’ll taste here will be great for a last toast before heading back home.

Balam was the perfect guide and host for this Mezcal tour. We visited a wonderful shop in Matatlán where we tasted aqua miel and pulque. Also visited three different Mezcal producers, who produce in different Traditions. All three very interesting. We had a great lunch. Balam is a safe driver and a very entertaining guide with knowledge about Mezcal but also about the indigenous cultures and the geography of Oaxaca. We had an amazing day!!!

What we expected and more! Pick up was on time. The van was comfortable. Balam, our guide/driver, was an excellent navigator. The tour went the same as advertised, but what you experience is so much more. Balam started the tour with a quick background and short history of Oaxaca, its different valleys and regions; the history of mezcal, its difference from tequila, the industry in general, and the people who are involved in the process from farming agave to producing mezcal. Balam showed us his deep knowledge of mezcal, answering all our questions, and clarifying all misconceptions. We were never brought to any tourist trap, and he was never pushy when it came to us buying bottles. But that wasn’t an issue because the tastings were enticing enough for us to buy bottles! We went home with a greater appreciation for and knowledge about mezcal and Oaxaca. I definitely would want my friends to be able to experience this tour.
