Hike the elephant-shaped mountain of the Cerro de Oro in the Guatemalan rainforest, and learn the legend of the lost Mayan gold and how it eluded the Spanish Conquistadors. Located on the slopes of Atitlan Volcano, the small hill is the site of a Mayan altar, still used by shamans for fire ceremonies. It is also said to be home to a portal to the Xiballba (Underworld). Go to the village church, built from hand-hewn volcanic stone, and enjoy stunning views from the plaza.
