Embera Village Day Tour, Chagres River & Waterfalls + Lunch

1. Embera Village Day Tour, Chagres River & Waterfalls + Lunch

Getting There At 8:00 am your friendly, bi-lingual guide will pick you up from your Panama City hotel. Sit back and relax in our comfortable, air-conditioned car while gazing at the various sites we will pass on our 40 minute drive to our tour starting point in the Chagres National Park. The Embera tribe lives in remote areas of the rainforest, and the only way to reach them is by boat. However, the journey is part of the adventure, and you'll get to see some of the stunning scenery that Panama has to offer. The Boat Ride At the port of the Chagres River, an Embera Indian will take you and your guide in a traditional boat called "piragua" on a 20 minute ride upstream to the Mono waterfall, where you can take a refreshing plunge (note: only available during the Dry season months from December through April. During the Wet Season months we may not be able to visit the waterfall due to strong currents). As you make your way through the rainforest, you'll be surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of wildlife. The boat ride is a great opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the jungle and to snap some incredible photos. Meeting the Embera People Once you arrive at the Embera village, you will meet the Tusipono Embera Indian tribe that has managed to reject our modern, technological ways of life and maintained its simple traditions. Once you step off your boat, you will be greeted by the friendly and welcoming Embera people. They'll introduce themselves, and you'll have the chance to ask questions and learn about their way of life. The Tour After our little hike and a delightful refreshing dip under the waterfall, we will continue to the Embera community. The tour will take you through the village, where you'll get to see how the Embera people live, work, and play. You'll see how they build their homes, cook their food, and make their crafts. You'll also get to witness traditional dances and music performances. One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to see the Embera people's intricate body art. The Embera people have a long tradition of using natural pigments to create intricate designs on their skin. You'll be able to see some of these designs up close and learn about the significance of each one. For a small fee, you can have the Embera design a body painting for you. The paint will be a temporary remembrance of your visit to the Embera tribe and will slowly fade away after a few days.

Next up we visit the "Tunnel of Love", a natural pool, surrounded by mangroves, inviting you to soak in the balmy, shallow waters. The experience will almost feel surreal, as realize your heightened senses, listening to the multitude of birds chirping all around you and the occasional monkey bellowing at his companions, all while sitting waist deep in a natural bathtub. A popular getaway for folk escaping the urban grind of Panama City, Isla Grande is an ideal setting for snorkeling, scuba diving or simply soaking up the island’s relaxed vibe. There are no roads here, just a small footpath along the island's southern coast, backed by pastel-colored cottages. Many of the people living here are of African descent and are eking out a living from fishing and growing coconuts – you’ll get a taste of both when you sample the local cuisine. We will recommend you an oceanfront restaurant, where seafood is served fresh from the ocean to your plate and where you can spend the rest of the day lounging on the private beach, sipping on a cold Balboa beer or snacking on delicious Patacones (fried plantains). At 3:00pm we will return to the port, making our way back to Portobelo, giving us the opportunity to explore the rich historical buildings around town. ‘Puerto Bello, ’the Beautiful Port, was named by Christopher Columbus in 1502, when he landed here on his fourth New World voyage. Since it was common during that time to abbreviate Spanish names, the beautiful port quickly became known as simply ‘Portobelo.’ During the 16th to the 18th centuries Portobelo was an important silver-exporting town and one of the two Atlantic ports on the route of the Spanish treasure fleets. Explore the old ruins and cannons idly aging away ion the Caribbean sun. As the sun starts dropping, we will make our way back to Panama City, arriving at your hotel at around 6:00pm.

This was the most amazing excursion we did in Panama, and we did several! The snorkel locations are fabulous and the water is very clear, so you can see fish and coral formations very well. The coral wall was stunning! I thought I might be afraid of the depth, but it's so shallow in front of the wall that there's no need to worry! This was my first time zip lining, and there was no disappointment! The lines take you over rivers, and through the rainforest, and the guides are great! Miguel was beyond awesome!! Kevin was so attentive and helpful, he helped make the day perfect!

The tour was a great end to our trip for us. We were picked up on time by our driver (Dan) and drove to the Caribbean in a very comfortable car. We saw many different landscapes, including how people live outside of Panama City. The fortifications in Portobelo are impressive. But the highlight was Isla Grande. We really enjoyed the crossing in the small boat and the beautiful hours on the beach. Dan, who was always available for us, organized a great meal for us on the island and then showed us the island on a short walk.

This was a great excursion! Our tour guide was Jorge and he was awesome! I appreciated how he was very informative and pointed out special landmarks. Snorkeling was okay if you’re a water lover. Ziplining was AMAZING! Miguel was the absolute best and his family farm and courses and hands down the BEST! Would definitely recommend!!!

If you are looking for an active, beautiful day in Panama, this is your tour. Snorkeling + beach + Zip Lining; a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of this lovely country. And Jorge was a spectacular guide. Highly recommend.

Wonderful place, relax, a lot a corals in the water, meal was good, we enjoy everything, thank you
