6. Dorgali: Trek to Gorropu with Panoramic Views

Meet your guide in Orosei or Dorgali before starting the adventure with some off-road driving to descend into the valley where the trek path begins. The hike starts with some water wading through the Flumineddu river to enter the woodland area formed of Old Oaks, Arbutus and Mediterranean shrubs. Walk along the cliffs of Monte Oddeu and arrive at the entrance to the Gorroppu gorge in less than 2 hours. Today the canyon is a natural border between the Italian territories of Urzulei and Orgosolo. The canyon was formed when the Flumineddu river excavated the Jurassic limestone that formed when Sardinia was covered by the sea. Learn from your guide how the marine rocks are full of fossils from ammonites, fish and algae found in the area, and hopefully catch a glimpse of such an artifact. Inside this town, in a beautiful landscape, in a flat area we find the Domus de Janas of Corongiu and the necropolis called De S'acqua Salida, dating back to 3200 BC. Still well preserved, they are a beautiful example of Pre-Nuragic architecture. In particular, the small but very important Domus of Corongiu still has spiral-shaped engravings that would represent the goddess of the eyes who protected the dead. But many other interpretations and interesting discoveries preserve the Domus de Janas of Pimentel that you can discover with our fascinating tour.

Cagliari: Full-Day Tour of Cala Luna & Sea Oxen Grottoes

10. Cagliari: Full-Day Tour of Cala Luna & Sea Oxen Grottoes

Here, once reigned “sea oxen” as the locals used to call monk seals due to their tapered shape and tame behavior like that of an ox. These magnificent mammals, now (maybe) extinct, gave their name to a marvel of nature: the Sea Oxen Grottoes (Grotte del Bue Marino), since the 50s one of the main attractions of the Gulf of Orosei, in particular Cala Gonone in Dorgali territory. Today, it is a favorite destination among nature lovers, and the ideal union between sea and mountain, as they are part of the karst system of Codula di Luna, Italy’s largest 70 kilometer of tunnels in the bowels of Gennargentu. Its majestic entrance, formed by two arches over the sea, is located 2 kilometers away from splendid Cala Luna. The marine caves are 15 kilometers long in total and divided into two main branches. The northern branch, fossilized due to the interrupted karstic activity, is not accessible to the public. However, you will also be able to visit the southern branch thanks to illuminated causeways for about 900 meters. Speleologists are allowed to explore an additional 4 kilometers (of the overall 5 of this branch). Seawater penetrates the wide hall, and countless little ponds of sweet water from subterraneous rivers abound, separated from sandy beaches filled with concrete formations. The tourist itinerary among stalactites and stalagmites will offer an extraordinary color spectacle, thanks to the light beams penetrating it. You cannot help but gasp in awe at the long shadows projected onto the waters of a subterranean saltwater lake with more than one square kilometer of surface.  The cave is also famous for esoteric rock paintings, dated back to the Neolithic, illustrating a circle of people around what is supposedly a representation of the sun. The walk finishes in the seal beach – these sea mammals once came here to mate and have their cubs. The visit will be led by expert guides and last about 1-hour. Leaving the Cala Gonone Harbor for an amazing boat tour until the caves. After the visit, it will be possible to stop at the Cala Luna for swimming in this little slice of paradise.

What people are saying about Province of Nuoro

We had an amazing experience with Simone! We went in the summer and were a little concerned with the heat, and while it was a bit hot this time of year, Simone made it very comfortable by stopping in shaded areas and giving us some history of the area and information about the flora and fauna. Super interesting! The rocks down in the canyon are slick in some areas, so if you need that extra ankle support, a good hiking shoe/boot is recommended. The trail was about 5 miles long, and up and down, although mainly uphill on the way in and downhill coming back. You go into the canyon as far as you can before the boulders get so big you can’t go any further without some rope. There is a stream down in the canyon which is great after an hour or two of hiking. Pack a lunch to eat at the bottom and plenty (2 liters) of water. The road down to the trailhead is REALLY bumpy and even with the 4x4, we bounced around quite a bit! However, this made the experience even more fun, in my opinion.

Full day of exploring all the main beaches of the Gulf of Orosei and secret spots! Prepare for lots of swimming and chilling out - bring umbrellas, enough water/ drinks and food to keep you going during this amazing daily experience!

Perfect day with two very nice guides. The ride lasted two hours longer than expected! We strongly recommend.

Great day with 4 different beaches! Remember parasol, food and water.

If you love summer and the sea ... it's all what you wish!!..
